GHS Connect #26 Monday 27 March

Mia's notes

One more week to go until a hopefully lovely, welcome break.

As this term draws to a close, please can I thank everyone for your exceptional hard work in all areas of the school, whether that be in supporting our crucial day to day operations, undertaking our day to day teaching, supporting pastorally to help students make the right choices, marking and assessment or running extra-curricular activities and trips.

Thank you in advance for everyone who is coming in over Easter to support our Year 11s and thank you also in advance for the hard work that I know everyone will put into Raising Achievement Day.

I hope that everyone has a truly wonderful break and I look forward to seeing everybody when we come back, hopefully a little rested and refreshed!

Mia

Learning and teaching: Spotted!

A round up of some of the great learning and teaching strategies we’ve noticed being used around school recently...

Rola Harb promoting mathematical literacy by encouraging students to use appropriate tier 3 terminology during practice activities.

Maya Popovic checking understanding of tasks by asking students to repeat instructions back, prior to beginning a task.

Adam Hamida making explicit between different ideas covered in the lesson, to build schema around language.

Dipa Pindoria supporting students to access the task by developing mathematical conceptualisation of area and perimeter before introducing formulas.

Tracey Cleave using meaningful summative assessments which sample a large domain quickly, and provide opportunity to practise exam technique.

KS3 Updates/Raising Achievement Day

Just a reminder about the following for pupils:

  • Meet/greet and end/send. As we are approach the end of term, students will just rush in or out of classrooms, so it’s good to have an orderly start and finish to lessons.
  • Please continue to embed lesson routines: ‘Do-Now’ tasks as students enter, reminding them about your expectations: equipment and uniform. Students will need gentle reminders.
  • Try to start homework in lessons, so there is a clear expectation and students can ask any questions they may have and ease them into the tasks.
  • Year 7s and now year 8s have purple folders for their homework - these seem to be used well. However, some are forgetting, so please do remind them to use these.

You can view the KS3 Spring Term Newsletter here

For Raising Achievement Day, a handout containing hints and tips for raising attainment will go out to parents. You can view the handout here

Bright Spots

This week’s bright spot comes from Richard Lewis and celebrates Karen Foster.

Can I just say how great Karen has been in supporting the Post 16 team with the tracking of UCAS fees for bursary/ non-bursary students. She does it in her characteristic efficient and clear way. Thank you very much to Karen.

Inclusion Heroes

This week’s Inclusion Hero is shared between Reena Bharadva and the Year 10 Team, with a special mention to Hassnain Mahay, for organising Your Life You Choose and the Barclays Life Skills Sessions for Year 7 and Year 10 last week. As we all know, there is an inordinate amount of work involved in getting these things off the ground, and both events will have been a fab experience for all of those students – thank you for going above and beyond!

A message from Emma and Rav about the Admin Cup:

We were very kindly given the trophy by Steve, and we have now given it to The Inspire centre for all the support they give, day in, day out!

H Block First Floor - Is it yours?
There is a lot of paperwork/books/folders in the corridor of H Block first floor.  As this is a bit of a 'no mans land' the students who sneak up there are just throwing it all around. If any of it belongs to you please can you collect it and move it somewhere safe as I have asked Mi...
