GHS Connect #22 Monday 27 February

Mia's notes

Thank you very much for your hard work and support in the first week back at Year 9 Parents’ Evening. I wasn’t able to wander around the two halls on this occasion, as I was actually seeing my own Year 9 class, but from what I could see, it seemed to go very well again and attendance looked great.
Thank you also to everyone who has been supporting with mock exams this week. In the main the Year 11s have been great, although there have been a few who have been struggling. Thank you, as ever, for everything that everyone does to make these pressure points a success - from the exams team, the pastoral teams, the caretaking teams and the teaching staff, it’s a real team effort that we always deliver on so well.
This week sees the next scheduled NEU strike, and as with last time, I’m sure that Jo and Katharine will provide further details. I will be writing to our parents today and outlining our plans for the day. As with last time, we will be opening the school partially, and further details will be provided on the VLE this week.  Please remember that if you do not come in that day, you will be considered to be striking, and if you do come in, you will need to sign in, in order to get paid.
As a result of the strike day, we will not run SLT Coffee, Cake and Chat on Thursday, but will look to reschedule this.
Have a lovely week everyone.

Mia

Learning and teaching: Spotted!

A round up of some of the great learning and teaching strategies we’ve noticed being used around school recently...

Khalid Noor supporting students to access the task by using mathematical conceptualisation to make abstract ideas more concrete for SEND students, and make learning “sticky”.

{alt_tag}

Chloe Altman bridging the gap to independence by encouraging students to link ideas back to previous learning. An excellent ‘hook’ Do Now activity was used which was accessible to all students.

Anneka Mehta by pre-empting the prior knowledge that needs to be checked for understanding and cold-calling a range of students. The IWB was used effectively to model ‘think alouds’ during Do Now feedback.

Clive Joseph supporting students to access the task by using targeted questioning to break learning down into small, manageable chunks.

Rewards

Rewards are important, they act as a ‘carrot’ or incentive for the masses (the is a small minority who don’t care – focus on the mass). It also allows us as professionals to develop a callout culture which in turn builds the character we want to see in our students as well as each other. Have a look at some interesting figures relating to character/rewards…

Since September you have given an astounding 172686 Character points (144544 in 21/22)

What these number looks like in real terms:
•    Over 2000 postcards sent home (post and hand delivered)
•    Countless positive phone calls home.
•    10 Head teachers’ commendations awarded.
•    Department reward trips
•    Certificates and Celebration events from year teams

Year 7:
•    Weekly celebration breakfasts for year 7s - 72 students participated in these breakfasts Autumn term.
•    Staff panto
•    Cinema afternoon in planning Spring 1 just before half term.
Year 8:
•    Celebration breakfast for students with 150-character points so far.
•    Games afternoon in planning Spring 1 just before half term.
•    Staff panto.
Year 9:
•    Two bowling reward trips – top 60 in Interim 1 data for A2L.
•    Magician afternoon – 100% attendance and zero behaviour points.
•    Pizza Party 1 – 9W3 for 100% attendance as a form. First since Year 7 for any form in the cohort.
•    Pizza Party 2 – For form board comp winners
•    Staff panto

Some other Highlights:
THIS IS HUGE – WE WILL BE USING SMHW TO RECORD Character Points – I will tell you more in briefing next week!

Reception Screen – Please send me images of trips, activities, groups, or individuals you’d like to celebrate.

Celebration walls – These are being updated, let me know who or what you think we should be displaying in recognition and celebration.

All staff (via HoDs) can nominate students for a head teachers’ commendation – it’s not just Heads of Year. If you have a student who has gone above and beyond our expectations, please put their names forward. Not everyone will make the heads commendation, but all will definitely be celebrated and at the very least have a Hot Chocolate Friday with a member of SLT.
Finally, I’m working with year teams to plan some BIG reward trips for the end of the year. Watch this space!

Happy Monday!

Inclusion Heroes

This week’s Inclusion Hero is going to be shared in 3 ways – firstly, I want to say a big thank you to the Science Department for amazing lessons across the board with Year 10 on Wednesday morning. I visited every single class, and the learning environment in each was fantastic. Secondly, another big thank you to the Year 9 Team and Andrea for Parents Evening last night. Seamlessly organised and a pleasure to meet so many of my students’ families. And, lastly, a big PSHCE thank you to everyone! I tried to get around to as many lessons as I could yesterday and was really impressed with what I saw across the board.
