GHS connect - Monday 18 November

From the Head

In briefing last week, I announced that I would be starting a staff wellbeing group, to look at simple ways we might be able to ensure that we keep an eye on workload, wellbeing and work-life balance - the 3 of which are interlinked, of course. I am looking for 6-8 people to be part of the group and I would like representation from teaching staff at various stages of their careers, along with support staff. I am planning on having meetings once a half term, during the school day. If you are interested in being involved, please drop me a line or pop in to see me.

Recent Hot Chocolate Fridays have been a delight and have reinforced just how much our students value you all. The importance of the form tutor was outlined by Nia Jeffrey who named Charline Blanc as her advocate. Nia completely understood what Charline was trying to do in supporting her if she makes the wrong choices with her behaviour.

Ola almost wrote an essay about Ravneet Dhindsa and Amandeep Phull - the key themes were working hard, high expectations, inspiration and most importantly, care. It’s interesting how often we are reminded that our students do want us to push them - they know we care if we seek to get the best out of them.

Sheba nominated Amanda Hill and Christabel Haines both for displaying exceptional listening and for explaining things to them really carefully, while Sahas championed his support from Ena Akinsoyinu and Niloo Adhami. Elias chose Aansa Ali and Ellie Navarro as sparking his interest in Geography and Science and Diya told us that Phil Crampton and Karishma Topiwalla both really believed in her.

It’s lovely how specific the students are when they talk about their teachers - a clear indication that relationships at GHS are often what make the biggest difference.

Thank you to Year 8 teachers and the Year 8 team for a long haul parents’ evening on Thursday. I always think it’s one of the hardest things to do after a long day of teaching. It was a great turnout and I was given very positive feedback from the parents I spoke to. Much appreciated everybody!

I hope everyone has a great week (not long now until the 29th November ...!)

Mia

Learning and Teaching

Spotted!

Dedicated to PSHE lessons this week....

> Georgina Stevens reconfiguring the seating in her room to facilitate effective group discussion where students could practise with their neighbour easily, before sharing ideas with the group.

> Sabrina Thurairajah leading a sensitive discussion about what constitutes sexual bullying with her form.

> Stephen Conlon carefully exploring the causes of ‘male shame’ in the context of domestic violence with his Year 13 form.

Have you tried...modelling with the visualiser?

Ollie Hardcastle in the Art department has been experimenting with using the visualiser to improve his students’ art work. He uses it at the top of the lesson to demonstrate to students the end product-what they’re aiming to produce-and then periodically during the lesson to demonstrate each step before the students try it independently. In this way, students built up their skills using wax to add texture to their paintings.

If you don’t have a visualiser and would like one for Christmas or you’d like some help getting going with one, drop Kelly an email: kmccarthy@greenford.ealing.sch.uk

In focus: Pupil Premium #2

As mentioned in last week’s Connect, we really need to keep our focus on PP Boys this year. While last year the cohort performed well, it’s clear that – in particular – we really need to focus on those PP Boys with Higher Band Prior Attainment as Interim 1 indicatives are suggesting that this cohort will, on average be almost half a grade away from meeting their targets in every subject.

PP champions

At the start of the year, it became clear that there needs to be more joined-up thinking and collaboration between departments around what we are doing across the school with PP students. There are so many wonderful things going on and we need a forum to share these, as well as to discuss strategies and solutions to overcome PP issues that we face. That’s why we launched the “Pupil Premium Champions” - a representative from each department to be a point of contact and focus for Pupil Premium in each subject area. The plan is to meet each half-term to review strategies and discuss ways to support PP students in each department, as well as relay key messages and discuss potential ways the PP budget can support pupils in each department. The role shouldn’t create any strenuous extra workload for “Champions”, and could be a developmental opportunity to engage in wider-school priority for someone. If you have any questions, please get in touch!

Top Tip to Takeaway…Think about your learning environment:

Think carefully about where Pupil Premium learners are sitting and who they are sitting next to.

Use Mint Classroom to highlight Pupil Premium learners on your seating plans. Use the reflective and predictive data you have on your Pupil Premium learners to identify the specific support they need to make progress.

Out and about

Writing on desks with whiteboard pens is a great way to help students process their thoughts and ideas before committing them to their book.
Having vocabulary banks and other resources centrally located on tables encourages independent learning from students.

Thank you to Karen Brown in MFL for these two ideas.

Year 12 and 13 Media students at the Into Film Festival in London featuring a Q&A session with film critic and feminist podcaster Anna Smith.
