GHS Connect #19 - Monday 8 February

GHS Connect #19 Monday 8 February

From the Head

One week to go until half term!  I know that everyone will be keeping things quiet and simple this year, but please do ensure that you take time off work and recharge your batteries. Remote learning is exhausting and it’s important to have a proper break. We don’t yet know if we’ll be back for 8th March, but we should all be planning for it in some form or another. I will, of course, let you know if I hear anything about the return to school, but it is most likely that I will first hear about it on the news, just like everyone else.

We’ve had some lovely feedback I would like to share. Firstly, I received this email from a parent last week:

I would just like to take this opportunity to thank you and your staff team for your continued online learning provision. Aryan has very much enjoyed his lessons and has flourished under this new norm. I fully appreciate how tough it is for staff having to prepare online lessons and deliver them with such enthusiasm; I’m astounded to hear them engage so positively, especially when at times I can imagine it is like talking into the abyss! They truly have continued to provide an outstanding provision and we are very grateful for this. Online parents evening was a success and I would just like to thank Aryan’s teachers for their commitment - and thank you to you all for giving us this opportunity to engage with his teachers.

Secondly, thank you to Dan Siskin, who has shared this model of best practice about Andrew Rugg, one of the Year 10 form tutors.

Andrew Rugg sent me a message this afternoon outlining some conversations that he had had with one of his tutees via his email. He forwarded me the 16-odd messages that they had shared back and forth which included Andrew being far more real and empathetic than what I considered possible via email. The message ended by outlining the practical steps he had taken to give some extra support to the student this week and next. I have been at Greenford for 5 years now and this exchange of emails was by far the most inspiring example of what being a form tutor is, that I have seen.

Finally, I just want to thank Trish and Hebe for their excellent initiative called ‘Futures in 15’ which is intended to be a series of short talks on careers and further education that can be posted out to students in remote learning and beyond. Please watch this short 3-minute video for more info. If you know someone - a friend, neighbour, family member, ex- student (anyone at all!) who would be interested in pre-recording a short video about their career journey or university/apprenticeship experience, or hosting a live Q&A for students, please email Trish and/or Hebe.

Learning and Teaching

Spotted!

Thank you to everyone for the energy and enthusiasm with which you have approached this latest round of online learning.  The response has been so positive that it’s impossible to pick out everyone, but here are a few we’ve heard about on the grapevine...

> Christie Tremain reorganising the French SOW to take into account remote learning, communicating this to the team and organising shared planning of resources.

> Serena Hayes using the chat function to do emotional check-ins with her students as a starter task in live lessons.

> Karen Brown striking the perfect balance in her live lessons between checking in on material learnt in previously set work (using platforms like Blooket) and new material taught live.

> Suzanne Hughes and Siobhan Divers doing live workouts for their students in year 9 and 10.

> Harpal Sagoo organising a guest speaker for his BTEC PE group.

Learning and Teaching: Recorded Lessons Tip

Many colleagues are making great use of recorded lessons across the school. This week Lisa Panford gives us a round up of some great strategies for recorded lessons with lesson clips including Harpal’s use of personal video messages; Christie’s use of digital certificates to celebrate students and Liz’s methods to make her lessons as interactive as possible for students. You can watch the video here - enjoy!

Student Teachers

This week we welcome our latest group of trainees. Thank you to everyone involved in continuing to provide high quality training in the most difficult of circumstances!

> Dhev Tamang (Computing and ICT) with Don Smith acting as SM, a role to which he brings so much experience.

> Ifrah Omar (English) with Chloe Altman stepping in to her new role as SM.

> Lul Warsame (Science - Biology) with Ellie Navarro continuing in her role as SM.

> Roisin Tierney (Art and Design) with Oliver Hardcastle stepping in to his new role as SM.

Spiral Training!

Don’t forget! Andrea and Richard are running a Spiral training for Post-16 teachers if you have 20 mins to spare on Monday afternoon (8 February).  More training to come after half term if you’re interested in learning how to use this platform.

Inclusion & Pastoral

We did it! We got through the first half-term of this and I would just like to say a HUGE thank you to everyone for supporting with:

> Live tutor sessions
> Online tutoring through GC
> Sending out Virtual tutor each Monday
> Setting remote PSHCE lessons
> Filling in the online trackers
> The running of Lockdown Mini-School - Go Team LDMS!
> Running Welfare for those who needed it
> Helping to identify kids who needed devices
> Phoning home for those kids who needed devices
> Spotting those who are struggling emotionally and helping them
> 3 million pastoral phone calls
> Putting assemblies together
> All the fab ideas about how to move forward
> And, all the positive feedback
> Making sure we have been there pastorally for our students, despite the challenges…

Have a well-earned half-term, everyone, and although we can’t get up to much, I hope that everyone gets the chance to recharge and rest. Please remember that if things are not going so well, or you need someone to reach out to, the school counsellors are there for you - just email Jo on jmorgan111.307@lgflmail.org.

Character strengths at GHS

In the last week before half-term, encourage your form to show GHS character strengths: courage, community and responsibility.

> Have they shown courage and turned on their cameras in live lessons?
> Have they contributed to their class community, sharing their ideas?
> Have they taken the responsibility to show up to lessons and hand work in on time?

Please share any names from your classes or forms of students who are showing our character strengths.

Reminder! 2.5 Code on Online Tracker ONLY for Post 16
Hello!  Just a reminder that we are trialling a 2.5 code with Post 16 only.   There are a few rogue 2.5s appearing on other year group sheets.  If you have accidentally added a 2.5, please could you amend, adding a 2 only if the student has not attended any live lessons and...
