GHS Connect #13 - Monday 7 December

GHS Connect #13 Monday 7 December

From the Head

I have spent an enjoyable few lessons with Year 7s over the last few days wrapping presents for all of the staff. I did this last year and it looks as if it might be a ritual to stay. I cannot tell you how hard it is to teach some of our Year 7s how to wrap up a present - holding the paper in place, the sellotape and the scissors at once, is all too much for some of them! I also cannot tell you how much they all love it. The excitement on their faces when I explain that they are going to be wrapping up a present to say thank you to their teachers is tangible; when they find a teacher’s name that they know, they almost explode!! During these sessions, I try to talk to them about our character strengths of courage, community and responsibility and explain that this is my (and their) way of saying ’thank you’ to our school community. Presents will be delivered to your department area or pigeon hole this week. Don’t get too excited (!) - it’s just a small token from me to express my gratitude for all that you do. :)

Speaking of thanks, I wanted to share a shout out for Cherish Bristow for how wonderful she has been working as a mentor with some of our Year 10 students. Dan has said it has made a huge difference to the year team having her time and skill to run organise and run these sessions. The students that she has been working with really appreciate her listening ear and strategies that they discuss. I also want to thank Dan and Cherish for all the work they are doing to promote diversity in music. This is a great initiative to get more students involved in anything to do with music, and I would encourage you to click on the links that they share on the VLE, and discuss these with students. Can I also thank Dan, Cherish and Maya for all of their work in preparing music for the assemblies that will be happening on the final day. Their singing is utterly beautiful. More on this below.

Can I also thank Sarah Williams for promoting the next Greenford Read book, ‘This Book Is Anti-Racist' by Tiffany Jewell. Can I encourage staff to take part in the whole school ‘Greenford Read’; it’s a great way for us to promote literacy as a school community and is also a good way for us all to focus on important issues as a school. As Sarah said in her announcement, ‘as we undertake a school wide curriculum review, this book is also very useful background (and it's a short read). If you weren't sure where to start reading up on how the world came to erupt over systemic racism in the summer, this is a good place to start’. As part of our work around addressing equality in school, I have booked a speaker, Professor Paul Miller, to deliver some training to us in March. I know that the curriculum review and the Equality group also continue to meet.

Finally, well done to Peter Mather on being appointed as the new Subject Network Lead for Geography for Ealing.  In the words of the panel, ‘Peter’s passion and experience shone throughout the entire presentation and follow-up discussion and we have no doubt that the Geography will be in expert hands for the remainder of the academic year’.

I will shortly be putting up details about the final day of term and how we will be delivering assemblies to each year group. To help manage the day safely, we will be dismissing various year groups at various times - this should all be clear in the VLE announcement I will post soon.

Learning and Teaching

Spotted!

A round up of some of the great learning and teaching strategies we’ve noticed being used around school recently…

> Annji Kinoshita-Bashforth structuring her questioning in such a way as to draw out students’ own ideas and develop them into more sophisticated responses.

> Marline Shaheen modelling to an individual student on a MWB - with arms outstretched - so they could see how to improve.

> Pravina Varsani using the IPEVO to model a practical project and keeping the students enthralled! (See picture)

> Hanad Mohamed deftly handling a student not knowing the answer to a question and addressing the misconception.

> Lucy Metcalfe supporting her students with tremendous energy and enthusiasm in their literacy lesson.

> Naomi Foote preparing her BTEC students so that they could work independently on scientific articles.

Learning and Teaching: HIIT, not just for the gym!

Jacob Chapman has been  trying out a new technique for retrieval practice in his lessons. Mid lesson he pauses and does a 10 minute HIIT exam session, where they look at an exam question from a previous topic.

HIIT exam practice:
3 minutes of teacher modeling under the IPEVO.
5 minutes of the students completing a similar question independently.
2 minutes marking a randomly selected piece of work under the IPEVO.

It is a really interesting way to break up the lesson, and an effective way to get students thinking about skills and content from a few weeks ago. If you’re interested in learning more about the technique, get in touch with Jacob.

Behaviour for Learning

Each week in Connect, Mark and Jo will be sharing behaviour for learning tips designed to help manage behaviour in the unusual circumstances of Covid-19.

Behaviour for Learning tip #4: Dealing with disruptive students

Question: There are about six boys who are intent on making every lesson a disaster: they won't sit in the correct seat, they mess about and they wreck every practical I try. How can I win them over?

Mark and Jo’s Answer: You need some leverage with these students. It is tempting to imagine that you could punish them into behaving in a different manner. The truth is that pure punishment might satisfy in the short term but will not solve this problem in the long term.

Speak to the students individually. Even though there is history this is not the time for emotion but for simple, clear and assertive explanation. Be honest about the fact that things have not been going well. Redraw the lines. Write down your expectations for and with each pupil. Map the consequences that follow from their behaviour. Emphasise your determination to support them in choosing better behaviour. Gently reveal that you intend to closely monitor changes from this point. Record the good and bad behaviour of each pupil over the course of the next six lessons.

Make it clear that that your records will be sent to the head of year and form tutor (parents too if appropriate). Keep this report sharply focused on three identifiable behaviours that you are going to see every lesson. Frame it in a positive light and highlight the opportunities to prove to everyone that things are changing. Send the parents a letter that explains how you are trying to address the behaviour.

Repair any damage of trust with the pupils. Make a point of catching them doing the right thing and recognising it in your comments, marking, rewards and comments to other staff. Stop and speak to the pupils when you see them. Slowly build a positive relationship, even if they are trying to keep their distance.

Inclusion & Pastoral

I am going to keep the news from Pastoral and Inclusion brief this week as we crawl towards the end of term - the first thing to remember is that we have PSHCE this week on Wednesday, P3, and this will be our last of the term. All of the resources can be viewed on the Teacher Share and you can also look ahead to what is going to be covered next term too. We are also going to have one more tutor slot in the last week of term. Apologies for mucking around with dates on this front - it will be on Friday, our last day of term, when we would be seeing our groups anyway. Remember, Tutor Time slots, PSHCE dates and the whole PSHCE programme are now on the VLE so that you can have a look.

I also wanted to remind everyone about all the bits and pieces that are going on behind the scenes, so that you are aware and can talk to Heads of Year if you feel certain students need to access support - Michelle, our social worker, is now up and running and working with some of our hardest to reach families, our Educational and Clinical Psychologists are busy assessing across the board, Scott Osborne is back in to mentor a small but challenging group, we have mentors at both Key Stage 3 and 4, and, as you can imagine, the Managed Move Panel, which involves high schools across the borough, is very busy… The next initiative is our resilience programme starting with Year 7 in the new year - if you would like to get involved or find out more, please let me know!

The last thing I wanted to mention is our counselling service, SCP - Jo and Tash have only been with us for a few weeks but are already working with a large number of students and staff. It’s been a tough few weeks for all of us, especially for those more directly affected by Ram’s death. Please, please feel free to access the service if you feel you need to. SCP are based up in AF16 and remember you can email Jo directly. I will also put a list up on the VLE of organisations that anyone can access, if they feel a school-based provision is not appropriate.

Enjoy the penultimate week!
