GHS Connect #12 Monday 1st December

Mia's notes

Welcome this week to December!

What’s all the fuss about pens?  Some people have understandably expressed bemusement about our insistence on certain colour pens in books. Why bother?  Well, as Andrea said in the staff meeting, we want to make sure that all of us (including the students themselves) can follow the dialogue of learning in the books.  Using red pen as teachers, means that the feedback stands out.  Please stick to red for teachers, purple for TAs, green for students acting on feedback.

Other key messages from the staff meeting were to be mindful of GDPR in communications - remember that whatever is written down can be accessed by parents if they choose to put in a request for information.  And finally, remember to use your seating plan as a start for inclusion - identify which students you will go to first, circulate with purpose and think about those emotional check ins.  This will be even more important in the last few weeks of term!

Hang in there and thanks for everything you are all doing,

Mia

Learning and Teaching Tips and Strategies

This week, Elisa Pigino shares examples of marking codes she has used as a form of live feedback.

The use of marking codes is an effective strategy because it directs attention to specific areas for improvement while highlighting strengths. It allows for small, actionable steps and encourages active engagement with feedback.

Some top tips for making this effective:

  • Keep it simple: Use a small set of consistent codes that are easy for students to remember.
  • Explain clearly: Ensure students know what each code means and how to respond. Provide examples when introducing these.
  • Consistency: Apply codes across all marking to build familiarity and understanding.
  • Review regularly: Check students are responding to codes and making amendments to their work.

Parental Engagement Update

Promoting Satchel One Use

Increasing uptake and consistency of the Satchel One app remains a priority. Clear homework instructions, timely updates and transparent behaviour and achievement records help parents stay connected to learning. Staff are encouraged to continue modelling best practice to support this.

Increasing Attendance for Parental Engagement Events

High attendance at Parents Evenings is essential, as regular conversations between teachers and families directly strengthen pupil progress, reinforce expectations and improve attainment. We will be placing a strong focus on further increasing attendance at Parents Evenings and other events, recognising the clear impact that more regular conversations between teachers and parents have on pupil progress. We will continue reviewing the structure and organisation of Parents Evenings to ensure they are accessible, informative and fully focused on learning and achievement.

Communication Channels

We are auditing all communication routes between home and school to ensure they remain effective and consistent. Improving message clarity and reducing duplication helps families stay informed and confident. The audit will also allow us to identify good practice across departments so we can share successful strategies more widely.

Pastoral Reminders

Safeguarding

This information is valuable for Pastoral Teams and Form Tutors and can be a helpful resource to share with students who live in these environments.

Domestic Abuse Support App – Bright Sky by Hestia

Domestic abuse, whether towards a female or male partner, can significantly affect the children who live in that environment. Exposure to violence, coercion or ongoing emotional manipulation disrupts a child’s sense of safety and can influence their behaviour, relationships and engagement in learning.

These situations are often hard to spot. Many victims work to hide what is happening, particularly from official agencies, due to fear of consequences for the abusive partner or worries about major upheaval for the family.

Hestia is a London-based charity that supports adults and children in crisis, delivering frontline services and campaigning nationally on issues such as domestic abuse, modern slavery and mental health. They have created the Bright Sky app, a free and discreet tool that helps people recognise signs of abuse, access specialist support and record concerns safely.

The Bright Sky app provides:

  • A simple tool to help someone recognise signs of abuse and understand whether a relationship feels unsafe.

  • A secure, optional journal for recording incidents or concerns that can later be shared with a trusted person or agency.

  • A directory of national and local support services, making it easier to find the right help quickly.

Inclusion L&T

Following on from the staff meeting on Tuesday, please can I ask that staff continue to review their seating plans, consider the barriers students face and apply the learning and teaching strategies upon your personal reflections.

Site Safety

Please can I remind staff that students must be supervised at all times during afterschool clubs and interventions.  Please do not arrange for students to use classrooms that are unsupervised by staff.  Reception should be aware of all students that are on site, to ensure we are safeguarding our students.

I hope you all had a lovely weekend.

Bright Spots

The first of this week's Bright Spots is Harpal Sagoo, nominated by Phoebe, who wants to thank him for planning and leading AO1 decision tips sessions with our girls’ and boys’ groups. Phoebe has also nominated Justine Doughty, saying she always makes sure the Y11s have somewhere to revise after school, even if it’s not her on the rota to supervise. Justine goes above and beyond to give up her own time.

Next, Scott has nominated Virginie Oulidi, saying:

Please can I nominate Virginie for a Bright Spot based on her amazing organisation for the Talk the Talk workshop for 70 of our Y12's. The day was smooth, calm and a great experience for our students, all down to her efforts.

Finally Fraser has nominated Umair Bux:

Umair Bux has done an incredible job being a ‘one-man-wonder’ this week while both Avnish and I have been off sick. He has been doing three people’s jobs and keeping the year 9s in check. I couldn’t have asked for a better DHOY
