GHS Connect #5 Monday 6th October

Mia's notes

Thank you to everyone who was involved in the Post 16 open evening - a crucial event for us as we seek to attract external students who are looking to join us for Post 16.

Coming up, we have the Careers Fair for Years 8 and 13, which I’m sure will prove to be a great event, and then the Year 7 Parent / Carer Information Evening the following week. Thank you again to everyone involved – I know that these events do require a lot of organisation.

I have noticed a big improvement in the conduct of students in lessons as I have walked around school – thank you for everything you are doing to work with students on their behaviour.  The year teams are also escalating non-attendance to after school detentions with military precision, and also ensuring that students are consistently in lunchtime detentions for uniform infringements.  Jayne is doing a fantastic job in supporting students in Student Services.

We are working as a team, and it is paying off. Let’s keep it up.

Have a lovely week,

Mia

Learning and Teaching Tips and Strategies

This week, a 60 second strategy on Culture: Dignify the Struggle.

It is important to show students that struggle is not a sign of weakness but an important part of the learning process.

The way teachers frame both effort and error directly shapes motivation and a sense of belonging. When difficulty is normalised and welcomed, we create a classroom with high expectations and strong support.

Top tips:

  • Model struggle by narrating your own errors in thinking:

e.g. “Let’s try a different approach because the first one didn’t work.”

  • Pre-frame difficulty to show it’s supposed to be hard:

e.g. “This is challenging- and that’s exactly why we’re doing it.”

  • Use subject-specific encouragement:

e.g.

Maths: “In problem solving, feeling stuck means you’re thinking deeply.”

Art: “Reworking your sketch shows your commitment to mastering your technique.”

English: “You’re editing like a real writer by showing resilience.”

  • Encourage reflection on struggle after a task:

e.g. “Which part was the most challenging? How did you push through it?”

Explicitly recognising struggle as a normal part of learning creates a classroom space where success feels achievable.

What is the next step? Read about how success drives motivation.

Exam Access Arrangements - Reminder

Changes to JCQ Guidelines for 2025

As mentioned in briefing last week, JCQ are updating the process of gathering evidence for and applying for exam access arrangements.

I have attached the slide for your reference but key points to note:

  1. Please still use the check box spreadsheet https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1rUIQploGcRMK_Tlfnhz5cmT6kAdelAD5  to identify if a student needs extra time, reader or scribe (laptop).
  2. Due to financial constraints, we can only test:
  • GCSE students whose current attainment is Grade 4 or lower
  • A Level Students who are not obtaining a Grade C, but show a commitment to the subject and a positive attitude to learning
  • BTEC students who are not achieving P in exam units but show a commitment to the subject and a positive attitude to learning.
  1. We will then gather evidence from teachers; we must have evidence from AT LEAST 3 teachers before we can proceed (this is for both GCSE and GCE).
  2. ALL TEACHER EVIDENCE MUST SHOW that you have trialled additional arrangements AND that they have been resulted in an improvement. BOTH accompanying forms must be completed. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1ONP7gJVI2qlKmkqlrjnzB6wNBdmUMS5N
  3. The best way to show the use of extra time, is by giving students the normal exam time. After this, students MUST change the colour of their pen and continue writing for an additional 25% extra time.
  4. The SEN Department will email teachers of individual students who have been identified, but if you would like to upload any work in advance, all student folders can be found here. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1U5-O1-t3ZO0H_kH6CBkoynvW8JwMKDVg .
  5. The SEN team have limited capacity for screening and processing paperwork; we therefore ask that you are prompt in sending over any evidence. We will screen students as they are referred so, please refer early.

REMINDER: Parents cannot request extra time for their children and a GP letter is not sufficient evidence. Please do not promise parents extra time!

Staff Wellbeing

At GHS, staff wellbeing is really important to us. We try to ensure that we consider the impact on staff in everything that we do.

These are the things that we have embedded into our practices:

  • The CPD calendar is carefully put together in consultation with LPs, HoDs and the unions to ensure that wellbeing is at the core of our meeting/CPD programme.
  • We are under our directed time requirements.
  • We ensure that we do not have a meeting slot the week of a parents evening.
  • We have a mental health lead that is available to support all staff.
  • We have a school based counsellor that staff can arrange to meet with, if they need to.
  • We are very generous with our LoAs. Mia believes in staff being able to support their families at key times in their lives, when we can.
  • We also support staff when they want to work flexibly, where possible.
  • We try to have as many get-togethers with refreshments  throughout the year including at the start of the year and the end of all the terms as well as pizza before parents evenings.

After feedback from a number of surveys and various groups, this year we will also be adding to our provision in the following ways:

  • Offering CPD in how to support students and colleagues.
  • Undertaking more regular staff surveys so that we know when the hotspots are and also asking for your ideas.
  • Live marking to reduce the marking load on staff.
  • Trying to improve our behaviour systems and support.
  • Ensuring that staff wellbeing is supported in all line management meetings.
  • Having a senior member of staff that colleagues can drop in if they are struggling with any work/personal issues. A Johal is available for all staff to pop in on Thursdays from 3:15 to 4:15 every week in AF14.
  • We have a staff wellbeing group which discusses important issues and looks at what is coming up and what the best way to support staff is.

If you have any other ideas, please let me know at ajohal@greenford.ealing.sch.uk.

Please can all staff complete this quick survey about the start of this academic year: Staff Survey Sep 2025. The deadline to complete this is Friday 10th October 2025.

Thank you

Amandip

Pastoral Reminders

Child Protection

This week there is an interesting article around TikTok’s practices.

TikTok algorithm

To summarise, the article highlights the impact of algorithms, what TikTok does to prevent this and focuses on the online harm codes (which I mentioned in the staff training at the start of the year).

Apps parents should be aware of:

Separately, I wanted to share a list of apps that parents should know about.  I will be sharing with Year 7 parents in my social media workshop.

Dangerous apps for kids

Inclusion - Form Time Activities

  • Just a reminder that the Child Protection Team have organised a range of Form Time Activities around Child Protection and Mental Health concerns.
  • This week the activities are focusing on Deep Fakes. Please play the video and then discuss the questions.

Inclusion Hero

This week I would like to say a huge thank you to Jelena Dein Sheikh.  The management of the Pathway Centre with the increased number of students has been organised, well managed, and the students are working purposefully.

Please can I just ask that the work set is not online where possible as the students will try to access platforms that hinder their learning.

Thank you so much for your continued support, hope you all had a lovely weekend.

Bright Spots

The first of this week's Bright Spots comes from Tam who says:

Please can I send a massive thank you to Chetna, Karen, Ruth, Emma, Rav, Jayne and Sarah Packman for their continued support in reception both whilst Nim was off having an operation and during her phased return.  I know this had an impact on their own workload, but they helped the team out with a happy heart.  Reception is the hub of the school and first port of call for visitors, so the additional hands were very much appreciated by myself and Mariella.  Thank you, lovely people.

Peter Mather also wants to thank Kathy Rayner for driving the minibus on the trip to Overstrand Hall, Norfolk, and to the Year 13 Geographers for their brilliant attitude, teamwork and hard work.
