GHS Connect #20 Monday 24th February

Mia's notes

Welcome back and hope everyone had a great half term.

This half term should see the days starting to get brighter and longer and hopefully the students starting to work harder! Please continue to set meaningful independent learning to support them as much as possible with this.

Have a great first week back.

Mia

Learning and Teaching - Pride in our Routines

This half term, we will be sharing top tips for retrieval and consolidation of knowledge.

This week, Reena Bharadva shares her top tips on using oracy to promote retrieval of knowledge.

The strategy:

  1. Chunk a theme/concept into smaller or atomised ideas.
  2. Pose a question around one of these.
  3. Organise students into pairs and ask them to speak for 1-2 minutes on this idea.
  4. Reassign pairings and pose a different question to discuss.
  5. Use a ‘last person standing’ approach to assign a winner to the most thorough speaker.

Top tips for this strategy:

  • Specify the tier 3 vocabulary that should be used when speaking.
  • Apply the discussed themes to a written exam question after.
  • Consider using classwork and notes to support discussions.
  • Promote taking turns to talk within the pairs.
  • Ensure teacher subject knowledge is strong.

This strategy takes minimal planning and is a great tool for morning lessons when you need to ignite energy into students.

Keen to explore this type of strategy further? Alex Quigley and Craig Barton discuss how ‘Just a minute’ can be used to promote oracy and develop retrieval here.

High Viz Duty Jackets
Watch out, Watch out, there's a Duty Jacket about! I have had a number of requests for replacement jackets as they have gone missing.  Can I suggest that all staff clearly mark their jacket with their name, so others don't feel tempted to 'borrow' your jacket?
