GHS Connect #4 Monday 30th September

Mia's notes

A slightly different week ahead of us with INSET day on Friday. We are starting at 8:30am with a charity breakfast in aid of Macmillan and then after we have worked through our appraisal meetings, we are happy for staff to work from home in the afternoon. More detail about this will be posted this week.

We also, of course, have Open Evening this week and I’d like to thank everyone in advance for all of the work that will go into creating wonderful displays, setting up classrooms so well and being so enthusiastic and inspiring on the evening itself! I know it is a long day and your commitment is very much appreciated.

Have a great week everyone,

Mia

Learning and Teaching - Pride in our Classrooms

A round up of some of the great learning and teaching strategies we’ve noticed being used around school recently...

Elisa Pigino builds a high participation ratio in the classroom though lollipop stick cold-calling. She adds competition into activities to motivate students. There was a real buzz of enthusiasm in the classroom as a result.

Nazneen Tarafdar uses low-stakes quizzing as exit tickets as part of her End and Send routine.

Serena Hayes completes live marking of work at A-Level whilst students complete independent work. She provides additional challenge on the board and spends time supporting individual students.

Digital Learning: Getting students focused on Google Classroom

At GHS, we want students to develop the tools to become good independent learners. Using Google Classroom is a way to support students in your subject.

“Technology offers ways to improve the impact of pupil practice.” EEF

Thank you for spending time and putting in the effort to set up Google Classrooms for all your students/year groups. By ensuring our students have access to resources outside our lessons, we can help improve the impact of pupil practice. Remember, the deadline for Google Classrooms to be up and running is Tuesday 1st October.

Google Classroom - How do you get the most out of this learning tool?

Google Classroom can be a great tool for storing our lessons and resources to help students study independently.

  • Add lesson resources (PP, handouts, links to videos) so that students can revisit material or catch up if they have missed a lesson.
  • Add lesson notes

  • Post links to online videos/reading that will help students develop wider knowledge.
    YouTube
    BBC bitesize
    Massolit
    Recording tutorials you make
  • Post links to online platforms to help revision.
    GCSEpod
    Educake

  • Seneca

Google Classroom - Have you considered using it as a centralised resource?

In Psychology, GCSE students have access to a G.C that provides all the resources they need for revision.

While in RE, they have set up a centralised page for Year 10 lessons.

Could this be right for your department to help streamline resources?

Lessons are available so that students can recap learning or catch up after absence.
Links can be added to encourage wider reading so that students can build their knowledge around a subject.

Finally, a word from two of our year 12 students on when Google Classroom is best…

As always, if you see any good practice, please share with the L&T team.

Inclusion Updates

SEN Pathway Centre

I wanted to celebrate the success of the SEN Pathway Centre.  Ms Sheik has worked with a small proportion of the students 1:1, supporting them with their class work, enabling them to cope and manage their anxiety and has been observing students to really understand the challenges they are facing within the school environment.  As a result, we have had less truancy around the site, a safe space for students to go and an area where they can complete work in a supportive yet firm environment.

The Pathway Centre is still in its infancy stage. As we develop this, we look forward to sharing with you greater outcomes.

Inclusion Heroes

This week I would like to praise Lisa and Manisha in the SEN department and Angela Thomas working with our CLA cohort.  They have been fabulous at supporting students around the school site, working with wider teams around the school and enabling especially the Year 7 pupils to transition successfully into Greenford.  A huge thank you.
