GHS Connect #1 Monday 9th September

Mia's notes

Welcome back to our first ‘proper’ week. Thank you to everyone for what has felt like a great start. Our new dining hall extension has made life in the canteen a bit easier and has provided a valuable, much needed additional space for our students.  Thank you also to everyone who has been implementing our T&L non-negotiables - as Andrea said in the INSET session ‘we need to be in this together’, and as such, please try your utmost to remember to implement the non-negotiables every lesson. There is more on this from the T&L team further down.

Finally, a reminder that directed time on days when there are no meetings is at 3:15pm, so no-one should be signing out of reception until that time unless they have a pre-arranged and authorised Leave of Absence. It also puts our students at risk if staff leave prior to 3:15pm as students are trying to safely leave via the Lady Margaret Road at this time and we need to minimise traffic.

Have a great week everyone,

Mia

Learning and Teaching

Thank you to everyone who is being consistent in embedding our L&T routines.

We have used warm meet and greets where we provide emotional check-ins and challenge uniform through non-verbal cues.

We have used low-stakes Do Nows to identify gaps in prior knowledge and address these ahead of teaching new content.

We have identified and clarified misconceptions through purposeful circulation, and use this as an opportunity to repeat instructions if necessary.

We have praised effort both verbally and on the board to recognise hard work and contributions.

We have used end and send to recognise achievements from the lesson and provide space to answer questions from quieter students.

Learning and Teaching - Embedding Excellence

A round up of some of the great learning and teaching strategies we’ve noticed being used around school recently...

Henry Blake teaching his year 8 class how to annotate and highlight a poem in their first lesson so they are set up with this crucial skill for the year:

Umair Bux draws explicit links between topics to model and share expert schema. He uses “remember when we…?” to support students to build these mental models.

Behaviour – Top Tips for your first few lessons

1) Always teach with your MINT seating plan in your hand. Learn student names and test yourself. Show students you are actively trying by moving your seating plan to the side of your hand and then saying student names. This will show them an effort to build relationships and build power in the classroom.

[Don’t tell me, [student name], I would like you to answer this one.]
[That was a wonderful answer from [student name], well done.]

2) Use the reward system for targeted praise. Give character points on the board, log them on the system, send postcards home and make early positive phone calls home. The more you do this, and sustain – the negative phone calls will be easier when they do have to occur.

[Excellent courage with the answer to a difficult question there, [student name], character points on the board.]
[Responsibility from everyone. Everyone is on task. Well done. Character points on the board.]

3) Set your expectations on entrance with meet and greet, silence when you are speaking (one voice) and exit.

[3, begin to end your conversations, 2, start looking to the front and 1, we should all be silent and facing me with nothing in your hands.] And… WAIT! Use non-verbal cues after the countdown.
[We are not leaving the classroom until all chairs are tucked in, your uniform is perfect, any rubbish is in the bin and we are all silent. And… WAIT!  We will begin with [student name’s table].

4) Acknowledge student classwork in their exercise book so they take pride. Use their names when you start the marking, use stickers and celebrate the best exercise books under the iPevo when they are returned.

[Student name, an excellently presented exercise book. Very responsible. Also, keep up the contributions in class. They have been noted.]
[Student name, lovely ideas in your exercise book. It would be great to hear you contribute at least once a lesson. Well done!]

5) When you set up tasks, make your instructions explicit. There should be less low-level disruption when the task then begins. During the tasks, circulate and be mindful of your body position.

[This is an independent, silent task. Before we begin, are there any questions that will benefit the whole class? You now have twenty minutes. If you need any help, please raise your hand.] And… WAIT! Begin to circulate after a while.
[This is a paired task. You should be speaking at a low-level.]

Inclusion Updates

Child Protection

A huge welcome back after the summer holidays. This week’s Connect Messages are following on from my CP training:

  • Please ensure you read the Keeping Children Safe in Education Document, read the declaration and accept by ticking the appropriate box on CPOMS.  So far we have over 50 staff that have completed this, so a huge thank you.  We will be following this with emails again next week.
  • Just some of the reminders of staff responsibilities and messages displayed during the training session:
    • Please ensure tight settings on your personal social media accounts
    • Ensure all photos etc are taken off any personal devices once uploaded onto a Google Drive
    • Please ensure you remember that all safeguarding protocols apply if you are, for example, tutoring students outside of school.
    • Please be active and on time to duty wearing your Hi-Viz jackets.

SEN

  • Please note we are working on the TA timetables and over the next couple of weeks there may be changes to TAs in your lessons.  We are trying to organise this as quickly as possible.
  • Year 7 students are now on MINT and SIMS, so learning and teaching strategies will follow shortly.

Thanks so much, any questions please feel free to see me.
