Behaviour – Top Tips for your first few lessons
1) Always teach with your MINT seating plan in your hand. Learn student names and test yourself. Show students you are actively trying by moving your seating plan to the side of your hand and then saying student names. This will show them an effort to build relationships and build power in the classroom.
[Don’t tell me, [student name], I would like you to answer this one.]
[That was a wonderful answer from [student name], well done.]
2) Use the reward system for targeted praise. Give character points on the board, log them on the system, send postcards home and make early positive phone calls home. The more you do this, and sustain – the negative phone calls will be easier when they do have to occur.
[Excellent courage with the answer to a difficult question there, [student name], character points on the board.]
[Responsibility from everyone. Everyone is on task. Well done. Character points on the board.]
3) Set your expectations on entrance with meet and greet, silence when you are speaking (one voice) and exit.
[3, begin to end your conversations, 2, start looking to the front and 1, we should all be silent and facing me with nothing in your hands.] And… WAIT! Use non-verbal cues after the countdown.
[We are not leaving the classroom until all chairs are tucked in, your uniform is perfect, any rubbish is in the bin and we are all silent. And… WAIT! We will begin with [student name’s table].
4) Acknowledge student classwork in their exercise book so they take pride. Use their names when you start the marking, use stickers and celebrate the best exercise books under the iPevo when they are returned.
[Student name, an excellently presented exercise book. Very responsible. Also, keep up the contributions in class. They have been noted.]
[Student name, lovely ideas in your exercise book. It would be great to hear you contribute at least once a lesson. Well done!]
5) When you set up tasks, make your instructions explicit. There should be less low-level disruption when the task then begins. During the tasks, circulate and be mindful of your body position.
[This is an independent, silent task. Before we begin, are there any questions that will benefit the whole class? You now have twenty minutes. If you need any help, please raise your hand.] And… WAIT! Begin to circulate after a while.
[This is a paired task. You should be speaking at a low-level.]
