GHS Connect #35 Monday 8th July
Mia's notes
As ever, there’s so much going on. Thank you so much to everyone involved in the trips to Thorpe Park this week. It was a shame about the rain on Friday, but hopefully everyone still had a great time.
Well done and thank you to the PE department for a wonderful, inaugural Sports Awards Evening. It was lovely to be able to celebrate so many sporting successes and the enthusiasm of the students was very audible! There was an amazing turnout which says so much about how much students value PE in our school.
As we head, or perhaps more truthfully, stagger towards the Summer, please remember that everyone is tired. Consistency, clarity, a strong presence and de-escalation when needed is more important than ever. For keeping students focused in the classroom for the next couple of weeks, please refer back to Ajay’s top tips from last week for classroom ideas.
Have a great week,
Mia

Learning and teaching: Embedding Excellence
A round up of some of the great learning and teaching strategies we’ve noticed being used around school recently...
|
|
Katherine Zoghbi engages and motivates students during revision through group translation games. Students roll the dice to randomise the questions they answer. Students described the activity as “fun”.
|
|
Karen Brown uses mini whiteboards to create a high participation ratio and check understanding of the whole class. This allows her to quickly identify gaps in knowledge and misconceptions.
|
|
Noor Al-Musawi bridges the gap to independence through the completion of open-book mock papers in pairs. Students held constructive discussions and built on each other’s answers to produce a high-quality written response.

KS3 Update
This half-term has been exciting for our KS3 Students. As well as seeing how the election process works, they got to take part in a mini–Greenford High School mock election!
Form time activities this half-term included the election process and reflecting on KS3 whilst getting ready for KS4 or the year ahead.
We had some activities to help our students look to the future, beyond KS3, thanks to our new partners at Aim Higher:
Year 9
There were 25 students taking part in the residential which ran from Wednesday 26th June-Friday 28th June. Pupils got the experience of living like a university student in student accommodation with their own room, an ensuite bathroom, and activities to help them get a real taste of what university education will be like. This is all for FREE!

Year 8
- University of West London Visit
20 students took part in an aviation and flight simulation experience on Monday 24th June. Students got a taster of what the world of aviation looks like and how to fly a plane by taking a step into a model aeroplane that will simulate a flight!

|
|
- University of West London Hospitality Taster
All students took part in a taster session on Tuesday 18th June. This gave them an insight into the world of hospitality. What does it mean to run a hotel? What is an events manager, and how do they cater for weddings? How do managers deal with difficult customers? These are just some of the topics that they got to explore!
And finally, end of year trips and celebration events are being organised by the year teams. Please encourage the students to be proactive and ensure their behaviour is exemplary, so they can participate in these fun activities.

QTS Success
It gives me great pleasure to congratulate our Teach First 2023 cohort; Morwenna, Karan, Sam, Elisa, Ljiljana and Avnish on their QTS status following very successful review meetings over the last couple of weeks that celebrated their achievements in the classroom, along with university assignments and training, since joining us last September. All will be recognised as qualified teachers, receiving notification from the Department for Education with certificates shortly and will continue their journey as young teachers starting as ECTs with us in September. Many thanks to their mentors, Naomi, Ellie, Emmet, Adam, Elizabeth, and Karen, for all their work too in supporting them, and best wishes for another successful training year ahead.
Peter.

SEN Update
Just a reminder that Fay has emailed departments the slides from the training on ADHD. Please can we discuss this in departments, and we will continue to share the strategies and work with departments in September.

Inclusion Heroes
This week I would like to thank all staff and the year teams for all their time and support in leading and running trips, to ensure our students have a truly inclusive experience in school. Students have been really positive about their days out.
