GHS Connect #32 Monday 17th June
Mia's notes
It’s hard to believe we are in the middle of June and the end of the year is rapidly approaching. As we head towards the end, it’s even more important to continue to embed clear routines for students, so that the expectation remains clear ahead of September. Trainers, a lack of ties and lashes are creeping in, so please remember to send students to Student Services if they are missing items, and alert year teams to trainers and other infringements so that students can be put into lunchtime detention.
Thank you to everyone who has been involved in all of our transition activities this year - especially Pam, Lou and everyone who has been running workshops. I am told that we have a lovely Year 7 on the way - let’s do all we can to settle them in as we continue to run events and meetings for them.
It’s Eid today - all the best wishes to everyone who is celebrating.
Have a great week,
Mia

Learning and teaching: Embedding Excellence
A round up of some of the great learning and teaching strategies we’ve noticed being used around school recently...
|
|
Jen Williams pauses to check and clarify understanding of tier 2 terminology and idioms that she knows some learners may not have prior knowledge of. Students are comfortable sharing their gaps in knowledge, and Jen is warm in her approach to addressing these, which creates an inclusive classroom.
|
|
Reena Bharadva shares expert schema at A-Level through live modelling on the visualiser. She uses scaffolded revision grids to support students to synthesise learning into themes, and asks students to ‘say it again, better’ using appropriate terminology.
|
|
Aansa Ali encourages students to take pride in their workbooks. Books are neatly presented, and tasks are designed to provide opportunity for students to be creative with expressing their ideas. Students said “we find it fun to do it like this”.

Learning & Teaching: ABC Strategies
Just a reminder that of our key L&T priorities this year, fully embedding the ABC strategies in our lessons is number 1! Now that the pressure of our exam groups is almost over for the year, it would be great to refocus on this with our remaining classes.
Please can we continue to prioritise Access to Task in lessons over the next few weeks, considering the following:
- If you are reading a text, have you pre-taught any key vocabulary? Will you read it aloud to model fluency for your class?
- If students are completing a quiz, have you reminded them of the previous learning which is being tested so they can feel successful?
- If students are beginning a task, is it appropriate to do the first part together, or model what you expect under the visualiser so they can continue independently?
- Do students need a sentence starter to enable them to put pen to paper?
Please do share any strategies you find particularly effective with the learning and teaching team.

Inclusion Updates
SEN
The SEN department have tested most of the year 12 students that have consented for exams access arrangements. Currently 130 students plus will be given extra time. This level of support will enable students to make greater levels of progress and is great outcome for the school.
Just a reminder to ask one member of the department to sign up to the ADHD training on Tuesday 25th June from 2:15pm-3:45pm. Please see Fay’s email for more details

CP/Mental Health Updates
I wanted to share with you some of the mental health providers we are encouraging students to use, especially outside of school:
|
|
The Mix: Offering counselling services covering a range of areas such as exam anxiety, varying needs and understanding discrimination to name a few.
|
|
Circle café: Offers support via the phone and in person. They offer a range of mental health needs and have access to CAMHS professionals. They provide a safe space on weekday evenings, 3pm - 11pm, and on weekends, 12pm - 8pm.

Additional Reminders
Please can I ask that if you have any students in your form or lessons that are not arriving to school, missing from your lessons you continue to inform the attendance team and missing from lesson email. We must know where students are and must safeguard students within the school.

Inclusion Heroes
This week I wanted to congratulate the exams team especially Hardeep Brar and the SEN team for the excellent feedback received by the JCQ inspector. He was very impressed by the quality of paperwork, the procedures and understanding of individual requirements to meet student needs. A huge thank you for all the work surrounding this.
