GHS Connect #31 Monday 10th June

Mia's notes

Welcome to Ajay Balu who has joined us as Deputy Headteaher. He will be introducing himself to students in assemblies this week and also starting to get his head around some of our procedures as well as meeting staff.  Do pop in to see him in B Block if you have a moment - he is currently sharing an office with Lou and this will become his permanent base in September.

Regarding the SLT, a few changes will take place in the structure and once finalised, I will publish this to staff. This is also the time of year that we start to publish any TLRs that are coming up to be advertised - do keep an eye on the VLE for announcements.

Thank you to Will who has set up an alumni page on the website with a form for interested participants to complete. You can refer any ex-students you still know to this at https://www.futurefirsthub.org.uk/register/greenford-high-school.  We have some amazing ex students that it would be great to connect with further.

Learning and teaching: Embedding Excellence

A round up of some of the great learning and teaching strategies we’ve noticed being used around school recently...

Sukhjinder Sidhu uses narration and storytelling to engage students and make abstract concepts more concrete. He co-constructs concept mind-maps to draw explicit links between ideas and build conceptual schema.

Anab Mohamed starts a unit by establishing prior knowledge of learners. She uses cold-calling and probing questions to assess the depth of understanding. Her classroom has a warm atmosphere where students are keen to contribute.

When a challenging question is posed and students struggle, Fay Hudson uses Think, Pair, Share and concrete examples to support them. There was a real buzz of enthusiasm in the class and students were keen to contribute their thoughts.

Warda Haibatan bridges the gap to independence with EAL learners by providing hints and tips to remind them of the strategies learnt. These prompts enabled the student to complete the task independently. Warda uses praise and encouragement to motivate learners.

Feedback from Inclusion Visit

Many of you will know we recently had an Inclusion Review led by Adam Brazier from the local authority. I wanted to share with you some of the feedback we had:

  • Adam Brazier was very impressed by the culture in school during his learning walks, staff were calm, managing conversations with students well and behaviour in classrooms was positive.
  • Quality of training in school and staff understanding of students needs was a strength.
  • Students echoed the schools ‘behaviour re-set’.
  • Excellent array of support in school in the form of year teams, mentoring and inclusive providers which are individually planned for students.

Thank you all for your ongoing support.

Gurvinder

Inclusion Updates

SEN

A reminder that currently lessons will have less TAs due to exams.  We are focussing on high priority students and TA’s working together in the first instance.

The SEN department will also be undertaking a KS3 book look, requesting books to view.  We are hoping this will enable us to share best practice across the school learning from different departments and establish training needs where necessary.

CP/Mental Health Updates

Please note there have been some changes to the wording in the Keeping Children Safe in Education Document. Please see the attached link for specific information.

Keeping Children Safe in Education amendment

Just a reminder that staff and students can seek support from Ms Adhami during lunch and break times.  Please feel free to pop along and also direct students accordingly.

Additional Reminders

  • If you have any students in your form or lessons that are not arriving to school, please can you continue to inform the attendance team and missing from lesson email.  We must know where students are and must safeguard students within the school.
  • Just a reminder that staff and students can seek support from Ms Adhami during lunch and break times. Please feel free to pop along and also direct students accordingly.

The Mix Counselling service is suitable for you if you are looking for short-term help with your mental health and emotional wellbeing. Telephone and Webchat counselling services are available to young people aged 25 years old and under. Their counsellors aim to support by listening to your problems and helping you find ways to cope in a confidential, safe space and it's completely free.

Inclusion Heroes

This week I would like to celebrate Angela Thomas.  We have recently received 3 new CLA and she has worked hard establishing good routines, working with external agencies in trying to support these students and transition them into school.

I would also like to welcome Roxanne Djik who has joined the school as the attached Year 8 pastoral worker.
