GHS Connect #30 Monday 3rd June

Mia's notes

Welcome back and I hope everyone has had a lovely break.

This final half term is the time when things change somewhat in school - Year 11 and 13 have left, we start to induct Year 7 into the main site more and we all take part in various more unusual (and hopefully fun!) activities with more trips, our international day and productions. It’s also a time for reflection and for planning for next year. We try to keep gained time as free as possible to support colleagues in being able to plan adequately for next year - hopefully this time will prove to be fruitful and productive.

Thank you to everyone who came in over the holidays to support with final revision sessions. This was very much appreciated! Thank you also to everyone who was involved in the Learnus event that Jeremy organised - a fantastic organisation that Jeremy has been involved in for a number of years, who research, study and link together the fields of neuroscience and education. You can find out more at http://www.learnus.co.uk/about.html

Have a great week,

Mia

Learning and teaching: Embedding Excellence

A round up of some of the great learning and teaching strategies we’ve noticed being used around school recently...

Maya Popovic's classroom is oozing with confidence from our EAL students. She delivers content with such enthusiasm that this is mirrored by students who speak excitedly about what they have learnt. The content is relatable and relevant, and the ongoing praise students receive has built confidence in our learners.

Will Halsey uses relatable examples and humour to hook students in and maintain motivation and engagement. Each task provides explicit opportunities to attempt grade 8/9 questions, which supports ‘challenge’ for all students in the class.

Trish Soneji uses scaffolded spaced practice at A-Level to model revision throughout the year. Students said "it really helps to remember the content rather than learning it once and then never looking at it again until the exam, so you've forgotten."

Rachael Fowler supports all students to access the task by pre-empting tier 2 vocabulary that students will struggle with and exploring this explicitly. She uses relatable examples to make these abstract ideas concrete; students were engrossed in her captivating narration of examples!

Parent Connect

Just a reminder to staff that this goes out to parents and carers on the Friday of Week B, to keep them updated about what is going on at school, give some top tips on how to support at home, and pass on contact details of key names. If you have anything that you would like to add, please contact me, and add any funky photos you may have here.

Inclusion Updates

SEN

A reminder that currently lessons will have less TA’s due to exams.  We are focussing on high priority students and TA’s working together in the first instance.

CP/Mental Health Updates

Mental health for children and young people is vital to their wellbeing and performance in education. The question that has been on people's lips for the past decade or so, has been how we can secure that area of their wellbeing? One of those ways is to get them moving and engaging in sports and physical endeavours. The connection between exercise and mental health has long been established. After all, humans were never supposed to be as sedentary as we are today. For children and young people, with bags of potential energy, this is even more true. The Mental Health Foundation, in honour of last month's 'Mental Health Awareness Week', has published data on this connection. To find out more, please follow the link below:

The Jay Review of Criminally Exploited Children - Action for Children

Practitioners in the safeguarding sphere, and general educationalists are aware that the criminal exploitation of children is a real threat. The progression of technology into all our lives, in addition to more traditional modes of grooming (both in the criminal and sexual sense) has made this danger larger than ever. This is far from a new phenomenon. However, in recent years, far more has been done to counter the issue than in previous generations. Part of this increased attention has been the result of wider reporting. It is vital that we know what works and what doesn't when we approach the very real risk of child criminal exploitation. In November 2023, Action for Children launched its Jay Review to answer this question. To read their executive summary and the report itself, please follow the link below:

Additional Reminders

Please can I ask that if you have any students in your form or lessons that are not arriving to school, or missing from your lessons you continue to inform the attendance team and use the missing from lesson email.  We must safeguard our students and know where they are.

Inclusion Heroes

This week I wanted to say a huge thank you to the Teaching Assistants and especially Isha and Zemora for their excellent support and in leading with the organisation of Year 11 exams in SEN.

Bright Spots

I just wanted to mention how amazing Niloo has been with her support for me while I was having my treatment and again today when I returned.

She is so positive and helped me to get through the tough times.

She is an absolute asset to the school, and I am sure must be equally amazing with her support for the student.

Joe Moors is our Year 10 Boys’ achievement lead. Joe spent 30 minutes on the phone to a parent, supporting and advising the family on how to support one of his more vulnerable tutees! Well done Joe- 10M4 are lucky to have you.
