GHS Connect #26 Monday 29th April
Mia's notes
Thank you to everyone for the big push on uniform and other behaviour matters. I was amused by how one of our serial trainer wearers has suddenly got herself a nice new pair of smart, sensible ankle boots. Funny that! As we said at the meeting, this is a group effort, and I know that everyone is trying their very best to make this better, so thank you. And remember, no hoodies, snoods or coats in lessons! In relation to behaviour, we are also looking at further ways to keep students busy at lunchtime, following the success of the boxing club so far. Thank you to Gurvinder for leading on this.
Thank you to Will Halsey for an outstanding Higher Education Fair, those staff out on the Matilda trip, the Year 13 Psychology trip, the Year 7 trip to Brunel, the Year 10 drama trip, the Geography field trip and the Year 12 Natural History Museum trip. What a lot that’s been going on! Thanks also to everyone involved in the CPD on Wednesday and to Niloo for sharing such important and powerful tips on managing stress.
Finally, thank you to Rav for taking our students to a brilliant ‘Southall Resists Day’, an artwork day celebrating and educating students about Southall’s history. If you haven’t already watched it, I do recommend watching the Channel 4 documentary about the Southall and Brick Lane resistance to the far right in the 1970s called ‘Defiance - Fighting the Far Right’. You can see more info at https://www.channel4.com/programmes/defiance-fighting-the-far-right
I hope ‘Made in Dagenham’ went brilliantly, Gabbii!

Learning and teaching: Embedding Excellence
A round up of some of the great learning and teaching strategies we’ve noticed being used around school recently...
|
|
Haydar Shah uses clear and concise explanations, with step-by-step stages on the board. He is explicit with sharing where each mark is obtained, which supports students to bridge the gap to independence with examinations.
|
|
Eleanor Williams scaffolds task requirements to provide additional support, and thoroughly questions students ahead of the task to check prerequisite knowledge and understanding of task instructions.
|
|
Cherish Bristow allocates time at the start of the lesson to answer questions on and explain homework tasks. SEND students asked questions to clarify expectations. This approach supports the success of all students with homework tasks.
|
|
Eleanor Navarro uses low-stakes retrieval for Do Now activities. She uses further questioning during feedback to probe hard thinking.
|
|
Chloe Altman uses the visualiser to model the deconstruction of texts. She uses cold-calling and probing questions to draw on students’ prior knowledge when applying this to a new context.

Behaviour Reset
The Vision
- Calm corridors
- Students looking impeccable in their uniforms.
- Focussed start and end to lessons.
- Students focussing on their learning.
- Students and staff working together respectfully.
To achieve our vision, we must have a whole school collaborative approach. We need you all to develop, tweak and fully embrace 6 key routines for every lesson.
These routines are listed here
Please ensure you check these regularly.

Bright Spot
This week's Bright Spot is Noor Al-Musawi, nominated by Amandeep Phull, who says:
He is always positive and plays an active part in the wider school community. He accompanied myself and Rola to Brunel with 30 Year 7s last week and has also volunteered to stay overnight for the year 9 residential in June.
More recently, on two occasions, I popped into his classroom to set up for my lessons and he was setting an excellent example of 'end and send' with Year 10s and 11s and I felt that if anyone is unsure of how to do this, they should pop in and see him model this.
