GHS Connect #13 Monday 11th December

Mia's notes

A week and a half to go. Well done everyone - it’s been a marathon but we are almost at the end of what has been a largely calm and successful term!

Highlights include such focus and drive from Year 11 (well done Year 11 team, Studio 11 team, exams team and of course, subject and form teachers!), outstanding work Post 16 on getting the students focused and in getting so many UCAS applications in, the embedding of our ‘better basics’ with a clear reduction in lates to lessons with much better attendance at detentions and improved acceptance of sanctions on the part of (most) students. Teaching and Learning has been fantastic, as evidenced by some great learning walks and the CPD sessions.  Trips, visits and wider learning outside of lessons have been outstanding - thank you to everyone who has contributed.

A reminder to keep a strong focus on good teaching and learning and routines, right up until the very end of term. As I said last week, no videos until the very last day please!

We will finish at 12pm on Thursday 21st December - the end of term arrangements can be found on the VLE.

Have a great week,

Mia

Learning and teaching: Embedding Excellence

A round up of some of the great learning and teaching strategies we’ve noticed being used around school recently...

Karan Uka supports students to access the task by repeating key phrases to draw attention to key ideas during listening exercises.

Harjit Bhullar motivates students by using ‘hints and tips’ as a form of scaffolding and ‘challenge’ questions to promote deep thinking.

Adam Hamida speaks to students with enthusiasm and passion when discussing key themes in chosen texts. This is mirrored by students who speak equally passionately about the text when asked questions. Students shared that they enjoyed the choice of text, and said that they found the themes very interesting.

Amit Pall, Jen Williams, Reena Bharadva, Paul Stokes and Kathryn Thomas modelling an excellent example of communication and oracy during a Living Library reading.

There will always be a time where duty or moving across the site will impact the start of our lessons. Feel free to try some of the ideas above to help promote an engaging/motivating start to the lesson for the students and still give us time to log on and set up. Those first 5 minutes are crucial to creating a thriving learning environment for our students.

Digital Learning at GHS - update

Thank you for being so receptive to the digital learning update during the staff meeting.

The entire presentation can be found here

Next term, more students will be using laptops. Please trial what is appropriate for your subject. The student could:

  • Create an online exercise book using a google document.
  • Type for assessments or extended answers.
  • Type on worksheets that have been uploaded onto google classroom.

Inclusion Updates

CP Updates

A huge thank you for all the information that has been inputted into CPOMS this term. We have been analysing the information and one area that we needed to explore further with our students was linked to Healthy Relationships. I wanted to say a huge thank you to Niloo and Stacey Hodgson, the schools Designated Police Officer, for running a series of workshops with Year 11 tutor groups on this area.

Mental Health Updates

Please have a look at the Mental Health Poster below for further support and guidance.

Inclusion Heroes:

A huge thank you to the SEN team, Fay, Naz, Monika and Christie for all their support this half term ensuing consultations are completed for the local authority. Completing an inordinate amount of exams, access arrangement paperwork and completing annual reviews to support our students.
