GHS Connect #7 Monday 30 October

Mia's notes

Welcome back and I hope everyone has had a restful half term.

As I said at the end of last half term, it’s really important to pace ourselves this half term - that means taking the long view, and working through the half term steadily, rather than coming in and throwing everything at it straight away. That’s particularly important this week as the weather changes, as it can alter everyone’s mood and energy levels significantly.

Last term we made a really great start on improving punctuality and uniform. Let’s keep that up. Please check uniform when students come into class - there should be no excuse as they should be going to Student Services to obtain missing items, and should be sent there if they do arrive without things. Please also remind students to keep shirts tucked in.  Hoodies and tracksuit tops are not allowed. If students are cold, they should have a school jumper.

Thank you in anticipation for everything this week!

Have a great start back,

Mia

Learning and teaching: Embedding Excellence

A round up of some of the great learning and teaching strategies we’ve noticed being used around school recently...

Ben Dyason has spent time training-up his GCSE PE class so that their books are really well organised and students clearly take pride in their work. Time is given during the lesson to make sure worksheets are glued in and Ben is regularly marking the books to check for this. He makes sure that student have the work glued in from any lesson that they miss so that they can catch-up. There was no difference in quality between boys and girls, PP and non-PP and other strata in the class.

Gabriella Gisby motivates students through verbal praise and providing live feedback as “EBI” next steps. There was a really enthusiastic classroom environment as students worked positively in groups.

Henry Blake uses clear icons on his flipchart slides to signal what type of activity it is for students.  For example, to signal silent work or to signal paired discussion.

Neha Palta promotes deep thinking by asking students to explore “how is this example different?” during class discussions.

Finola Doyle encourages students to take pride in their work books through positive written praise and subject-specific stamps. Students were very keen to share their work and wanted their books to be photographed!

The Maths department support students to take pride in their workbooks by using standardised feedback sheets for book presentation. This allows teachers to provide individualised and specific feedback in a quick and timely manner.

Back to Basics

Punctuality

Thank you to everyone for supporting our push on punctuality. Feedback from colleagues (and students) was overwhelmingly positive about the bells system and the way this has created a calmer and more focused start to lessons, with improved punctuality!

Remember:

L - late to lesson P1, P3 = Lunchtime detention on the same day

L - late to lesson P5 = Lunchtime detention the following day

Uniform

Thank you to all staff for relentlessly challenging and following up on students’ uniform infractions. Jayne is doing a brilliant job of getting uniforms for students who need them. A reminder as we move into the colder months of the year that students are not allowed to wear hoods inside buildings. Students must remove coats when inside lessons or form time. Scarves must be plain and not patterned and must be school colours which are black, green, white, or purple. YTs have sent reminders home regarding this so please challenge and confiscate if seen. SLT will be conducting a learning walk during form time focused upon uniform this week.

Meet & Greet and End & Send

A reminder to all colleagues regarding the importance of “meeting and greeting” students at the door to your classroom – the perfect place to address any uniform issues and to welcome your students into the lesson with either a handshake or a tap on the shoulder.

A further reminder regarding “ending and sending” at the end of your lesson – standing at the door and praising in public (PIP) any student that has demonstrated a character strength or gone above and beyond in your lesson. Alternatively, reprimanding in private (RIP) by having a swift restorative conversation at the door to reset behaviour expectations.

Low-level disruption strategies

A reminder that staff can access the low-level disruption top tips and other resources from the CPD in September. They can be found by clicking the relevant link.

Low-level disruption strategies can be found here.

Charlie Taylor’s checklist can be found here.

Communication strategies for pro-social behaviour and ways to create internal discipline can be found here.

Restorative conversations

It is important to engage in a restorative conversation with a student before you see them again. Ask year teams if you need support with these. There are prompts that we shared at the beginning of the year to help you shape these conversations – these can be found here.

Behaviour Surgery

We would like to open the behaviour surgery to all staff who wish to input and reflect on how things are going. The first one will take place on Thursday at lunchtime on 2nd November. The surgery will take place in GG13 and will run every fortnight during Week A only.

We hope you have a lovely week!
