GHS Connect #6 Monday 16 October

Mia's notes

5 days to go until a very welcome break for everyone!

We’ve been really fortunate with the weather this year, with a late Summer descending upon us, but after half term we will be certain to be fully in the throes of autumn gloom and darkness. This time of year can always have a big effect on people and so it’s always at this time that I tell people to please ‘pace yourself’.

Pacing oneself to me always means coming into work as normal but recognising that things will be harder at this time of year, with a reminder that although it is most certainly the hardest half term of the year (for me anyway), it will come to an end, and things will get better after Christmas. For me, pacing oneself is also about recognising that it’s okay to have an easier day each week and make a point of going home earlier rather than later, and it’s also okay to have the odd lesson where students are asked to peer assess or evaluate one another’s work rather than relying on our own marking all of the time.

The most important thing though, is to have a really great break over the half term and I hope everyone manages to do that.

On a completely different note, we look forward to welcoming Justine to the Pastoral Support Worker team after half term - we know she will be a great addition to the team!

Have a great week,

Mia

Learning and teaching: Embedding Excellence

A round up of some of the great learning and teaching strategies we’ve noticed being used around school recently...

Daniel Oag using Blooket, an online platform, to engage his students in a competitive way to help with memory retrieval. A great way to incorporate digital literacy within your lessons.

Joe Moors being creative with his year 12/13 Btec Sport class by getting them to create a model of the lungs using some accessories. Students were engaged and had to work in groups to create their version of the lungs.

Kapilan Raveendran using peer teaching to motivate and engage students by giving them ownership of their learning. He developed oracy skills by encouraging students to “Say it again better” as they were delivering their explanations.

Kyra Bah using scaffolded I do, We do examples with minimal variation to support students to access the skill. A concise “think aloud” was used to explain each step in the calculation.

Belen Sanchez has fostered a positive and active tutor-time environment. She made sure that every student had the opportunity to engage and speak in a “getting to know you” session for the Student Teacher with her. All students were in the correct uniform, bags were on the floor and were having an engaging start to their day.

Joseph Wilcox was really getting to know his tutor group and was building positive relationships whilst students played games. The atmosphere was warm and purposeful and Joseph has clearly built positive relationships with his tutees. Students were focused, in the correct uniform and having fun!

Motivational Information Retrieval

Each fortnight we will be sharing a resource which will support information retrieval and/or consolidation of content, but hopefully in a motivational way!

This week we are sharing a vocab spinner wheel website - fill up the wheel with key words you would like your students to use and then in the lesson, click the ‘spin’ button once to start the wheel.

This is brilliant to consolidate key terminology that has already been learnt, particularly if you need students to use it in an exam question or essay later in the lesson.

Click here for the website - please edit as appropriate! Enjoy!

Inclusion Heroes:

A huge thank you to the following staff for their continued support:

‘A massive thank you to Steve who has been so dedicated to our Studio 11 provision, since it started 3 weeks ago. I don’t know where I’d be without you Steve- thank you!’

‘ A huge shout out to Monika Sierkowska who has taken the lead on a GHS based parenting programme, run by an Ealing Safer Parenting Group. Monika works hard to make sure our most vulnerable families are supported, and the first session drew in 25 families. Thank you Monika!’
