GHS Connect #37 Monday 10 July

Mia's notes

Thank you very much to everyone for all of the amazing trips and events in school last week. There was a definite buzz around the school, with a real feeling of positivity. First prize for a World Book Day costume has to go to Richard Lewis (he must have been boiling hot all day!), and it was wonderful to see the dramatic reading of ‘The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time’ during our belated World Book Day!

I’m a big believer that along with ‘stick’ (sanctions) we must have ‘carrot’ (interesting, exciting, memorable experiences in this case) for students as it keeps them busy, keeps them motivated and provides the necessary variety for a rich and varied educational experience. Thank you all so much because you are providing this in spades right now, whether it be in the form of the school production, International Day, D of E, cricket matches, sports day, reading events, trips and visits, CDIA exhibitions and a whole host of other things I will have forgotten.

Speaking of ‘stick’, I will provide more info in September, but we are currently drawing up plans for simpler, hopefully more effective strategies around both punctuality and uniform.  I will be writing to parents this week to draw attention to this as we hope to hit the ground running in September.

Have a fantastic week,

Mia

Learning and teaching: Spotted!

A round up of some of the great learning and teaching strategies we’ve noticed being used around school recently...

Lisa Leonard demonstrates responsive teaching through a scaffolded recap to fill knowledge gaps from cover lessons, and therefore enables all students to access future tasks.

Benjamin Dupres promoting oracy by creating a safe space for discussion; clear guidelines were set ahead of talk and all contributions were positively acknowledged, which supported a meaningful discussion.

Scott McCreeth supporting students to access the task by using relatable examples as a “hook” for a new and abstract concept.

Marcia Henry repeating instructions in stages to support the management of cognitive load for SEN learners.

A Celebration of CPD: Action Research Carousel

Thank you to all staff for supporting the culmination of our action research work this year, the CPD carousel.  A special thanks goes to our presenters: Trisha, Tara, Fabian, Naomi, Tom, Liz, Ramya, Amit and Ben G. It can be quite daunting presenting to an audience of teachers but all our presenters gave participants a succinct summary of relevant research, the highs and lows of implementing strategies and clear takeaways which we could try in our own classrooms.

The Learning and Teaching team look forward to offering a new range of Action Research Projects next academic year, based on feedback from colleagues.

Inclusion Heroes

This week’s Inclusion Hero goes to DT, Drama, Art and Music for a wonderful display of all the work achieved in your respective departments over the last year on Tuesday after school – it was brilliant to see, hear and taste everything and a fab way to spend the afternoon. Thank you to everyone, and to all the students, who helped make it happen.

STOP PRESS – a late addition to the list. Hemal has just been to see me to say that he is off to the Volunteer of the Year Awards, run by the borough, where he has been put forward for his work with MVP this year. Good luck, Hemal!

Bright Spots

This week's Bright Spot goes to Sarah Williams, nominated by Elaine Grundy.

Elaine said: 'Sarah's organisation of both the Year 7 Greenford Read and World Book Day was amazing, she always encourages staff and pupils to read, and she does all of this with amazing enthusiasm. Thank you Sarah!'
