GHS Connect #28 Tuesday 2 May

Mia's notes

I hope everyone had a lovely, long weekend. We obviously have another strike day as we come back, and then it will be a very short 3 day week, followed by another bank holiday!

A little reminder that with disrupted weeks, we can see a change in student behaviour, particularly from those who need clear routines and consistency. It’s important for us to remember that for some of our students, there is not always a great deal of consistency and routine at home, so they depend on this at school. As such, please keep the focus on being positive, on de-escalation and for Year 11 and 13 particularly, on simplifying what they need to do now to achieve success. Positive messages are essential.

It’s also really important to actively avoid too much cognitive overload at this stage with exam classes. Yes, it is the final push, but reinforcement and the breaking down of key ideas is what is needed now. This is not the time to try to cram in new concepts.

As a staff, our thoughts are, unbelievably, beginning to turn towards what next year might look like, and as such, I would ask again that if you intend to move on and have not yet communicated this, it is really helpful to let us know.  Please also note that if you wish to ask for a change to your working hours, at this stage, I am unlikely to be able to agree anything definite until the timetable has been worked on by Alan and Adam. Please also look out for some TLR opportunities coming out over the next few weeks - as usual, we tend to advertise these towards and during the last Summer half term.

Have a great week,

Mia

Learning and teaching: Spotted!

A round up of some of the great learning and teaching strategies we’ve noticed being used around school recently...

{alt_tag}

Ajit Kundi checking understanding of prior learning when taking over a class, and using the data obtained to amend the lesson.

Virginie Oulidi embedding multiple real-life examples into explanations to support students to conceptualise abstract concepts and access the task.

Karen Brown bridging the gap to independence by asking students to say-it-again-better when pronunciation was anything less than perfect. High standards were maintained throughout as a result.

Kathryn Thomas using I do, We do, You do to support students to access the task. The sequence was broken into manageable chunks as students’ “You do” was only the first paragraph.

Respect

Thank you to everyone for your support around the push on Respect - this term we will continue to prompt our students to think about how to behave in a pro-social and respectful manner to everyone in our community.

Following your Year Team Meetings at the start of this term, this document has now been adapted for students. It looks at why respect is so important, breaks down what respectful behaviour looks like, pivoted around our 5 Character Strengths, and reminds students of what sanctions will be put in place for those who continue to be disrespectful. Each week I will be asking tutors to go through a different Character Strength with their groups (this week was Compassion) so that we can keep reminding students. Watch the VLE for this week’s presentation on Community!

If we do have issues with respect, either in the classroom or outside, please could you ensure that you log this as Defiance Behaviour Point - these points will now be carefully tracked by Year Teams and will also form the basis of who we will be putting forward for our Respect Workshops, written and run by our PSWs, and starting this week with a group of Year 8 students.

Ever the optimist, I look forward to seeing many improvements in this area for that small minority of students who are struggling with showing respect… Fingers crossed! And, as always, a big thank you to everyone for your support with all our students from a Pastoral and Inclusion point of view and for your patience with some of our more vulnerable and challenging students.

Lou

Bright Spots

This week’s bright spots go to Steve Wilson, Naomi Foot, Rachael Fowler, Stephen Conlon and Jen Williams.

Steve Wilson, nominated by Jeremy Jones:  Last month, the GHS Admin Cup was awarded, by Jayne and Karen, to our very own Steve for outstanding contributions to all things security, keeping everyone he meets positive and of course doing toilet duty!

Naomi Foot, nominated by Andrea Hetherington:  Naomi has created a great character reward initiative with her year 8 Science class which involves her using a tracker for each of the character strengths. Students collect stars and then tick which reward they want after they’ve earned 4. Naomi is using this with her nurture group and it’s proving very successful. Well done Naomi!

Rachael Fowler, Stephen Conlon and Jen Williams, nominated by Phoebe Henderson-Barnes:  These fantastic English teachers led GCSE masterclasses to a band of Year 11s during form times last week. They prepared a presentation and delivered it to a band each, to help them prepare for their exams/ last minute advice. It was a great intervention. Thanks to all!

Mia

Inclusion Heroes

This week’s Inclusion Hero goes to the Post-16 Team for organising last week’s International Day – it was wonderful! I thoroughly enjoyed seeing and hearing our lovely students taking part in the day. Thank you for bringing a flash of loveliness to the week!
