GHS Connect #25 Monday 20 March

Mia's notes

I hope everyone had a great weekend.

It was certainly quiet to have 2 days of near school closure, but things will obviously return to more normality this week, if any week can ever be described as normal!

This week we have a very busy schedule with no fewer than 9 trips taking place and 2 parent workshops. Thank you very much to Adam, Will Harrison, Katie, Jamie, Rupinder, Ben, Sarah, Georgia, Jonny, Sushila, Jeremy, Christabel, Dan, Malakh, Tracey, Joseph Moors, Laura, Tom, Tara and Noble who are accompanying students on trips - one of which is taking place on a Saturday! Thanks also to Cherish who has organised the parent workshops to try and further engage some of our Year 9 parents further in the Arts.

Other than that, as I said last week, it’s ‘heads down’ for students, particularly in Years 11 and 13, so that they can focus on making the necessary, but very achievable last few incremental steps towards success. Remember, we can make a real difference in these last few weeks, and actively teach what they need to improve. We can also continue to positively motivate students - it’s amazing what a difference it can make if we simply tell students they can do it over and over again!

Enjoy your week,

Mia

Learning and teaching: Spotted!

A round up of some of the great learning and teaching strategies we’ve noticed being used around school recently...

{alt_tag}

Keely Juster using retrieval Google Quiz homework based on the lesson to check understanding of core knowledge.

Thomas Oseku-Afful using a modelled example on the board, checking understanding of each knowledge component throughout, and responding by reteaching where necessary.

Joseph Moors using action-specific praise and live feedback to scaffold small and manageable next steps for individuals during a match, which bridged the gap to independence.

Amanda Hill developing high level vocabulary application by using modelled examples in context and relatable examples to move from abstract to concrete.

GHS - Mitie Partnership

Greenford High School is a big site to manage and its imperative that we work in close partnership with Mitie to ensure it stays clean and safe for all students, staff and visitors.

As a PFI (Private Finance Initiative) school, our building, furniture, telephones and equipment etc belong to a private company and not the local authority, as in most cases.  We merely rent the site from a private landlord and it is that landlord who employ Mitie to maintain the site.  Should any of the landlord’s property get damaged, either by accident or vandalism, it must be replaced at our cost.  There is however a lifecycle calendar which replaces items that have come to the end of their expected life.

These last few months have seen a lot of changes in the Mitie team, so I thought it would be good to share faces and names of the new caretaking team with you.

A few Mitie reminders for you:

  • If you notice anything that is broken/needs fixing or attention, please don’t verbally ask a caretaker, email facilities@greenford.ealing.sch.uk
  • If your teaching style is for students to write on desks, please ensure they are wiped clean prior to moving to the next lesson
  • Lockup in the evening starts at 6:30pm so ALL staff must have left the site by then.  If staying for an event, an additional hours form must be completed (see Tam for that)
  • FSM Packed lunch requests for trips must be sent to Mitie (cc to Tam) at least 3 working days prior to when they are needed.  You can find the form here

Bright Spots

This week’s bright spots are Gina King and Hardeep Brar and have been nominated by Amandip Johal.

Gina has a very difficult job to do, balancing cover requests from trips and unavoidable sickness. Gina is always so understanding and helpful, and we would not be able to run the school without her!

Hardeep has been her usual efficient self throughout a long period of internal exams over the last few weeks. Hardeep’s calm planning and organisation of exams, both internal and external means that students always also feel calm. This enables them to hopefully do their very best!

Thank you and well done to Gina and Hardeep!

Inclusion Heroes

This week’s Inclusion Heroes are both to do with Year 8 – Tara Quigley has been put forward for her amazing assembly that she did on Tuesday for her year group around anti-racism, which I hear was brilliant and thought-provoking. And, I would like to say a big thank you to all the staff who have worked so hard at accommodating the timetable of one of the most high-profile students in that year group and putting up with our daily emails about where she is going to be that day… A big thank you to all of you!
