GHS connect - Monday 6 January

From the Head

Welcome back!  Hopefully everyone has had a wonderful Christmas break full of festive cheer and fun, along with some opportunities for relaxation along the way. I don’t know about anyone else, but I really appreciated the few days before Christmas to do some ‘normal’ things before the Christmas focus really kicked in. And now of course, we’re back…..how time flies (especially during the holidays!)

Peter has asked me to pass on congratulations to all of our NQTs and Teach First trainees who have successfully completed their first term – well done to Rebecca, Cimi, Tara, Stephen, Rupinder, Sabina, Oli, Adam, Deeqa, Naomi and Hebe. Many thanks also to their mentors for all their hard work in helping them complete reviews and first term reports to the borough - Maddie, Ramona, Reena, Jen, Dipa, Georgia, Alistair, Jacob, Richard, Christabel, Jo, Kelly and Kathryn. Credit also needs to go to the whole staff in terms of supporting all our new arrivals at GHS; they would not achieve so highly without the support of everyone in school!

Tomorrow we will have a staff meeting which we have moved to the beginning of the meeting time from 3:15pm - 4pm. Staff can head off to departments to moderate PPEs afterwards.

Have a great first week back.

Mia

In focus: the ARP

Last term was an exciting one with the ARP at maximum capacity. We had a successful term thanks to the support and dedication of the HLTAs. Not only have we been able to meet the complex needs of the students by supporting them in a nurturing environment, working closely with parents, external agencies and teachers, we have also worked hard at trying to encourage and enable our ARP students to develop as competent and independent learners.

We recognise that each ARP student has a great deal to offer and we celebrate each ARP student’s individuality, their efforts and achievements in settling in well into GHS which has been a huge change for the new ARP boys who have worked really well and have made progress.

The ARP students have been able to access mainstream learning as well as additional ARP sessions and life skills sessions such as baking which they have all thoroughly enjoyed. All these have really helped to develop and build their confidence as they continue to maximise their potential. We are proud of our achievements so far and we look forward to an even better and more successful term ahead.

Thank you for all of your support for our ARP children.

Out and about

Some people may remember ex-student Navjot Sawhney who has been in the news over Christmas for his design of a hand-cranked washing machine, a number of which are being sent to an Iraqi refugee camp. Nav is now studying an MSc at the University of Bath. He was a great student when he was here. He’s now 29!

If you are feeling the January blues and want a reminder of our Christmas celebrations, look no further than David Clare’s wonderful film which he captured on the last day. Thank you to David for putting the time and effort into this. There are some great Christmas jumpers on display!
