GHS Connect #18 Monday 31 January

From the Head

Welcome back to another week - just 2 weeks to go until half term!

First of all this week, well done to Sajjad who has been appointed to Acting Leader of KS5 Maths. We will interview for Acting HOY soon, and keep your eyes open for any other opportunities that may come up.

A few thank yous first of all from me, this week.

Once again, a big thank you to Noble and Tom for taking students to the First Lego League Competition on a Saturday. The students did brilliantly, winning the Innovation Project Award, and I will be meeting with them all shortly to celebrate their success.

Thanks to everyone involved in Parents Evening. For Year 10, we ended up with 83% booked and 88% of those attending. This is a great effort and pretty much in line with what we would have normally seen when in person.

I also want to pass on a really big thank you from Gina, for the staff who have been helping with cover last week, when we were unable to get in supply all of the time. Fortunately it hasn’t been a huge amount but it is always very much appreciated.

As I said last week, we’re now fully in the business of focusing on learning at this time of year. As part of that can I remind everyone to keep in mind some of the things we have prioritised this year, when planning and delivering lessons, as well as when meeting as a department?

  • Remember our ‘bounce back’ strategy and consider the best ways to implement this in your own classes;
  • Continue to plan for the needs of SEN students. A = Access to Task; B = Bridge to Learning; C = Check Understanding of Your Groups;
  • Remember to maximise the use of ‘Show My Homework’ and Google Classroom and build independence outside of the classroom.

It looks as if we might be a little bit short of staff again this week, but I know that everyone will pull together and support each other, and I thank you for that once again in advance.

Have a lovely week,

Mia

Learning and Teaching

Spotted!

A special shout out to some colleagues in the English and Maths departments who have been working hard to implement the ABC strategies and support our SEN/less able learners.

  • Neha Palta targeting students for  1:1 support as she circulated the room. The work was well scaffolded and was appropriately challenging so all students were on task.

  • Anneka Mehta ensuring that as soon as students were set off on a task,  she checked that her ECHP student could access the work and re-explained concepts as needed (right).

  • Stephen Conlon teaching specific exam strategies to support students in an area they have found challenging. He used clear instructions and broke down what to do so that students could practise using the strategies in lesson time.

Learning and Teaching: CPD 3

This Wednesday we have the third instalment of our teacher-research CPD programme.  Group leads will be in touch with the arrangements for this.

Similar to the last session, we will start with an opportunity to reflect and discuss your progress with colleagues. To support this discussion please bring something to demonstrate the work you have been doing.

This could be:

  • An exercise book (or photo)
  • Piece of completed work (or a photo).
  • Before and after images to demonstrate a change.
  • A resource you have developed e.g. worksheet.
  • SIMS data.
  • CP/BP data.
  • An extra piece of reading you have consulted.

Though we will continue to work on our chosen areas until the summer, this will be the last ‘research input’ for this academic year. For the next session we’ll bring back the popular L&T carousel so that colleagues can see and learn from what other teachers have been working on.

Thank you to all colleagues for their enthusiastic participation in the research groups!

Inclusion and Pastoral

We’re over half-way through - hurrah! And, thank you to everyone for a much calmer week last week.

On that note, I just wanted to let staff know that we have now contacted all of the students who were involved in the incident on 20th January and there will be a series of SLT detentions taking place this week for the majority. There have been more serious sanctions for those who were at the forefront of the group running around the school and for those who either filmed it or shared it on social media. I will talk to all students about safe conduct both around school and online in assemblies this week.

We are back to real life assemblies from Monday onwards - these will be in the Sports Hall to begin with due to exams and this week’s will be a mixture of me and Keely delivering them. The theme is of tolerance, as we enter the traditional time of year when we celebrate LGBTQ+, along with messages about who to turn to, and what to do if anyone feels unhappy or bullied in any way. To tie in with this, Keely is also organising a one-off PSHCE lesson this week on this topic and will circulate that as soon as it is ready. This will substitute any lessons that were on the usual cycle - we will return to these in the week after half-term.

Last bit from me this week - sadly, we have had to postpone Your Life You Choose due to covid and concerns about possible staff shortages. But, it will be back in the summer term - watch this space! And, we are going to have a bit of a push on SMHW now that students are fully on board. Another mailing will go out to parents before half-term to get the numbers up.

Have a good week,

Lou

Inclusion Heroes!

Our Inclusion Hero this week is Jesse Mantey who accompanied me to visit an alternative provision for a student who is no longer working with us but is still struggling. Thank you for taking the time, Jesse!

Character strengths at GHS

This half-term, our focus has been on Courage.

Friday marks the start of the Beijing Winter Olympics 2022. Why not start a discussion with your form about how they can build Courage by listening to the little voice inside that encourages them to keep trying.

Use the story of Michael “Eddie” Edwards whose Olympics dream was difficult to realise: he wasn’t an elite athlete and team GB didn’t have any ski jumpers in its team. He decided to try to be the first ski jumper from Team GB to achieve his Olympic dream.

While he finished last in the two events, he is still famous today for his efforts. He is recognised as “a true Olympic spirit, who wanted to compete to the best of his abilities, regardless of his chances of winning.”

To inspire your form with Eddie The Eagle’s story and more Winter Olympic moments, follow this link: https://olympics.com/en/news/watch-10-wildest-olympic-winter-games-moments

Is there anyone in your form we can celebrate for showing Courage? Please send their names and stories to us.

A valiant effort from the U13s Football squad. The girls had an amazing cup run, and got to the quarter finals of the Jan Harding Cup. Well done to Vyners, who secured a 3-2 win against us. Goal scorers: Ava (2) https://t.co/X0VRqcBZOC
