GHS Connect #17 Monday 24 January

GHS Connect #17 Monday 24 January

From the Head

I hope everyone has had a lovely weekend.

First of all, congratulations to Gulaid and his wife who have had baby girl called Ayah - we wish them all the best!

We press ahead with recruitment and have appointed a new science, maths and PE teacher in the last couple of weeks. Well done to Fay Hudson and Monika Siek who were both appointed as Deputy SENCOs on Friday. These are crucial posts in continuing to support us in moving this area forwards and they will begin after half term when we say farewell to the wonderful Lucy Metcalfe who has secured a SENCO position in another school.

Covid cases appear to be easing, and while we will continue with virtual assemblies this week, we intend to move back to assemblies in the hall as of next week. This is an important part of our students’ routine, and as long as it is safe to do so, we will run them. At this point, I’d like to give a special thank you to Nugbinder who has worked tirelessly on Covid tracking over the past few weeks. It’s been very busy at times but she always remains calm and focused and has a very clear system for us all to follow.

Obviously, we know that we had a moment of particularly poor behaviour last week with some rushing in the playground. As I said in my announcement, thank you to everyone who supported with this - it clearly wasn’t a pleasant experience. Sanctions will follow after full investigations have been carried out.

Finally, schools work in rhythms and cycles, so remember that these next few weeks are about the business of learning more than anything else. I was privileged to see the plans for KS3 and KS4 catch up last week at my SLT meeting, and was again struck by everyone’s commitment to ensuring that all of our students make the progress that they deserve over the coming months. It was also lovely to hear about the Year 8 celebration event along with some of our sporting successes recently. Well done to Jesse and the KS3 basketball team who beat Dormers Wells, with Karish Potchilaiarasu and Adam Mohamed scoring 16 out of the 23 points for the team. I thought I’d also share that I have just been informed that Javon Marquis in Year 11 has just started a trial at Arsenal Academy. If you teach any of these students, please do congratulate them.

Have a great week,

Mia

Learning and Teaching

Spotted!

A round up of some of the great learning and teaching strategies we’ve noticed being used around school recently...

  • The Science Department demonstrating 50-50 (and Mr Mahamed posing with his ruler).
  • Jeremy Dudman-Jones inspiring his students with a psychological experiment that was so interesting to them they were all still talking about it on the way home!

Learning and Teaching: Catch up interventions

With 16 weeks left until the start of the exam season, we have started a range of interventions to help students bounce back. 141 (57%) of our year 11 cohort are currently involved in at least one type of interventions on offer:

  • Department led intervention
  • Study Club
  • Academic Tutoring in Maths/English*
  • Student Led Tutoring in Math/English/Science*
  • My Tutor (online) for English/Science*

*These are paid interventions that will run for the next 14 weeks and, for those selected, attendance is mandatory.

All of these interventions are to support quality first teaching and the work you do in lessons. If you want a list of those involved so you can keep an eye on how it’s impacting their progress, or want to take students who are working in Study Club, please speak to Andrea Hetherington.

Here are some of our students working hard last week...

Clockwise from above:

  • Hebe working with a group of year 11s.
  • Judah working with his Science My Tutor.
  • Abayomi, one of our Academic Mentors, working with a group of year 11 students to improve their writing.

Inclusion and Pastoral

I hope that everyone has had a good rest over the weekend - amazing to think we only have 3 weeks left of this half-term!

There’s not too much to mention this week - many thanks to everyone for PSHCE on Thursday. I spent the session visiting as many classrooms as I could and was really impressed with what I saw across the board. Last week I mentioned Your Life You Choose and Chelsea’s Choice - these will take place on 8th Feb for Year 7 and 1st March for a number of year groups. We will be sending details nearer the time but please be aware that Year 7 will be off timetable for the whole day.

I have a few emails this week about self-harm and how to work with what seems to be an increasing number of students who are self-harming. Please let Child Protection know about any concerns that you have and call for Welfare if there is an immediate problem. Niloo has been in contact with our school counsellors and the borough to ask for some generic tips that we can give to both staff and students and to see if there is any more support that can be offered. Please remember to use Jo Morgan if you feel that you have been affected by something you have seen or heard - she is available on scp@greenford.ealing.sch.uk. There is also a Self-Harm Policy if you feel you need further guidance and/or support.

That’s it from me this week - thank you as always for your patience with all the various interventions we have running at the moment from an Inclusion point of view. Any questions about anything we are doing, just ask!

Have a good week,

Lou

Inclusion Heroes!

Our two Inclusion Heroes this week are Christine Gada for her amazing work with her tutor group - Thursday morning was a masterclass in an outstanding PSHCE lesson! And, David Whitehead for his excellent work supporting various lessons across the curriculum. A member of staff emailed me to say how fantastic David has been and I thought he deserved a more public shout-out!

Behaviour for Learning: Ending and sending

In order to foster and maintain positive relationships, we start our lessons doing 50/50 as well as ending and sending them in a similar way.

By positioning yourself half in and half out of the classroom at the start and end of lessons, you are able to greet your class in a personal way or say goodbye/a final few words which makes pupils feel valued and therefore builds and maintains positive relationships. This strategy also enables you to watch over your class and the corridors.

When every teacher is at the door doing 50/50 or ending and sending the lesson, we have a massive corridor presence and this has a very positive impact on student behaviour at the start and end of lessons.

Behaviour for Learning Surgery will take place this week on Wednesday at lunchtime in the classroom just off the small gym (GG13). We will have an open forum this week so you can come along to discuss whatever behaviour related issues you like and seek support from a range of staff. We look forward to seeing you there!

We hope you have a great week. Please do come and have a chat with either of us if you have any behaviour suggestions, ideas or feedback.

Mark and Jo

Out and about this week

A huge thanks to visiting speaker Hashi Mohamed for giving an inspiring lecture to exam students in the Hall last week. A former child refugee turned barrister and author, you can read more about his incredible story in the Guardian here and also an extract from his book People Like Us here. Thank you Gulaid for sharing these from the event...

Meanwhile, at the PiXL conference last Wednesday, Andrea found herself an unexpected star of PiXL TV...
