GHS Connect #14 Monday 13 December

GHS Connect #14 Monday 13 December

From the Head

4 ½ days to go! Hang in there!

I’m keeping it brief this week and just reminding everyone of the end of term arrangements which can be found on the VLE here (note: you'll need to be already logged into the VLE for the link to work). A reminder also that we will hold our leaving speeches virtually, with some snacks delivered around to staff. Please remember that it’s really important to say farewell to our colleagues properly, so everyone should be present for this virtual event, in school, unless you have a LOA.

We are still running the Christmas concert at the moment - this will be a socially distanced event, so please do support it on Wednesday if you can.

I’ll say more on Friday, but I do just want to acknowledge how hard this term has been and how brilliant everyone has been. It’s been tough, coming back and trying to get the students back to normality, focus and hard work, with some more on board than others!  This is all on the back of an incredibly exhausting two years, which nobody has really had the chance to recover from properly, with the uncertainty of what might happen next also hanging in the balance.  So thank you, everyone - I know it has been far from easy and I do really appreciate everything that everyone has done.

Please do make sure that you have a proper break over Christmas - it is really important to stop and switch off for a while, even if you are not venturing far from home.

Don’t forget that we won’t return until Wednesday 5th January with a staggered start to allow for the testing as outlined on the VLE here.

Enjoy the final few days,

Mia

Learning and Teaching

Spotted!

A round up of some of the great learning and teaching strategies we’ve noticed being used around school recently...

  • Will Halsey pre-teaching a difficult concept before students had to apply it. His explanation was really clear because he used examples that the students could hook their learning onto.

  • Marike Littlefair modelling how to construct a paragraph for her year 7 historians and supporting her students to eventually work without the scaffold and complete their own paragraphs independently:

Learning and Teaching

I’m sure everyone saw the news over the weekend regarding the spread of the new Omicron variant.  While we have no reason to believe that schooling in the new year will be interrupted by measures to counter this, we would like to take two small precautions, just in case.

  • Please make sure - before we wrap up this week - that all of your students have joined the relevant Google Classrooms and can use the platform.
  • Please check that MINT Class seating plans are accurate. They can be changed for January if you wish to move students.

Thank you for all your hard work this term to drive learning and teaching forward!

Inclusion and Pastoral

Hurrah! Last week - and what a term it's been...

A huge thank you to everyone for your patience, your hard work and your care for all of the students, and in particular those who have struggled more this term, for a variety of reasons. When I talk to colleagues from other schools, the pastoral and inclusion demands across the board have been huge as we have all dealt with the fallout of two very unusual years. You have been fantastic!

It’s really important that everyone gets a proper break from it all and I know that some of you may be anxious about some of your students over the break - in her role as Mental Health Lead, Niloo has put together a Wellbeing Bulletin for students and families that will go out this week. Please let your tutor groups know, especially those who may need it more than others. And, if any need support, please remember our counsellors are there for you, and to look at the bulletin too.

Have a brilliant break and a very Merry Christmas!

Lou

Inclusion Heroes!

This week’s award goes to Carol, Ben, Ysobel and especially our new Welfare Officer Emma for an incredible response to a medical emergency during the week - quite simply, thank you!

Character strengths at GHS

This half-term, we have been focusing on Compassion. Assemblies have been centred around the message of kindness and how you treat yourself/ others.

In form time this week, can students recall the key messages they’ve heard?

  • Ms Hetherington’s assembly on Compassion at GHS
  • Mr Manby’s assembly on Remembrance
  • Mrs McCarthy’s assembly on Anti-bullying
  • Miss Westcott’s assembly on Careers
  • Mrs Johal’s assembly on Charitable work
  • Ms Williams' assembly on The Christmas Story

As always, please share any examples of students showing our Character Strengths.

Happy holidays!
