GHS Connect #37 Monday 12 July

GHS Connect #37 Monday 12 July

From the Head

I hope that everyone has recovered from football last night. I decided to save my contribution to Connect until after the result, so that we could all bask in a blaze of glory and celebration, but sadly it wasn’t to be, and perhaps the less said now, the better!

Just a few reminders from me this week.  The final day of term arrangements are outlined below:

Note: Year 12 will not be in school

Periods 1&2 -  Normal Lessons for Years 7, 8, 9 and 10.

Break as normal - 10.30 to 11.00am

11.00 – Form time

Students to go to Form rooms with Form Tutors (same rooms as Friday Form time) Virtual Assembly to be shown in Form rooms during this time. (The link for the assembly will be made available nearer to the time).

11.45 – Year 9 and Year 8 depart via usual routes

11.55 – Year 10 and Year 7 depart via usual routes

12.30 – Staff gathering in Dining Hall, Main Hall and F Block Foyer:

  Drinks and food
  Staff Leaving Video Part 1
  Break (15mins)
  Staff Leaving Video Part 2
  Drinks and food
  Depart at approximately 1.45pm

You can also find details about this on the VLE here under staff announcements.

A reminder also that we have a memorial gathering for Douval on Tuesday 20th July. Please contact Amandip via email if you have any questions about this.

Don’t forget about Sports Day on Monday 19th and Tuesday 20th July. This year, the event will be held in school for Year 7 and Year 8 only. It’s bound to be a great, fun event, even if it is a little different. And finally, remember to support our students in our annual Summer music concert on Wednesday 14th July from 4pm - 5pm in the hall. Even though the event will be livestreamed, having some staff there will ensure that students have an audience.

Thank you all so much, as we near the end of an exhausting term, not to mention year! It’s really not long now, so hang in there….

Mia

Learning and Teaching

Spotted!

More great examples of teachers keeping up really high expectations with their students all the way to the end of term, making sure no potential learning moment is wasted!

> Pam Lewis setting up a writing task with her Y8 class. Pam built in deliberate, silent “thinking time” before asking students to complete a task or give an answer. The focus in the room was palpable!

> Lucy Metcalfe enthusing her Geogracy class (and checking their knowledge) with a fun quiz on habitats.

> Charline Blanc using no hands up questioning to check knowledge. Charline also checked literacy spontaneously by asking students to spell words so she could write them on the board.

> The Academic Mentors supporting departments to create wonderful displays!

Learning and Teaching: displays

Daisy Roscoe and her team have been busy backing corridor display boards across the school. Thank you to all the departments that are creating such engaging and informative displays. Here are a few we have spotted already!

Please get started putting any displays up as soon as your boards are ready. HODs have details about which boards have been allocated to your department + layout requirements.

All boards should be complete by Friday 16th July.

Inclusion & Pastoral

I am going to keep it super short this week on the basis that everyone is exhausted and will be digesting the outcome of the football, poor Bukayo.

So, here goes:

Assemblies - thank you to everyone for supporting these. There will be one more set this Thursday, Periods 1 - 4 and Heads of Year will be in contact about the logistics;

Tackling racism - the theme of this week’s assembly will be to talk to students about racism, the use of language, and the impact their actions can have. Watch this space for more information…

Virtual Tutor - huge thanks to Trish and Hebe for putting this week’s VT together on the subject of Careers;

Student Survey - please get your tutees to look back at last week’s VT to complete the survey;

Show My Homework - last call to staff, please! And, please encourage your classes and tutor groups to sign up too;

RSE - last lesson of the term this Friday. Another huge thank you to everyone for delivering this across the school. Early results from the student survey would suggest that they have found these lessons really useful;

Counselling - don’t forget that help is on hand, should you need it. Just email scp@greenford.ealing.sch.uk.

Right, that’s it - I hope that everyone gets through this last full week. Nearly there now!

Character strengths at GHS

In our last full week of teaching, if you spot a student showing one of our Character Strengths - give them achievement points to recognise their Courage, Community, Responsibility, Compassion or Resilience.

I want to celebrate some moments I caught this week:

Courage

In the post-16 exhibition, Keren Sondi showed courage in speaking out against injustice. One of her pieces depicted images of victims of race attacks on baby-grows. This thought provoking piece reminds us that we are all someone’s child.

Community

On Friday, period 6, year 7 came together as a community during a classroom debate. They built connections and created an environment of respect as they listened to each other’s ideas, building convincing arguments for and against the topic.

Responsibility

Two year 10 students took the responsibility to use their break on Thursday to work on their personal statements.

Compassion

Jo’s students were very appreciative after she’d shown them compassion by taking the time to write them each a card, celebrating an achievement they had accomplished this year. I could see their gratitude for her act of kindness in their reactions and excitement when opening their cards.

Resilience

Our year 10s have shown great resilience in their continued dedication to their studies. They have been attending My Tudor each week where they are supported by an online tutor for English and Science. There was a tangible buzz in the canteen when students logged in to receive one of their last tutorials.

On Wednesday afternoon, year 8 showed resilience when they worked hard to re-draft a piece of writing in Maya’s lesson - she observed that it was their best piece of work this year.

As always, if you have any feedback or questions, please get in touch. Also, share any examples of students showing excellent character so we can celebrate.
